:new: Hi, I'm new to this site, just signed up today . I have been working in the medical field for 25 years, and due to stress and being a single parent started drinking after work to sleep, relieve stress etc. one beer grew to six to 12 to whatever. It became worse when I had a panic attack on the freeway one day. I thought I would die!! I went to DR. and she prescribed me Xanax.. I didnt like how I felt, and when she said it was like having a couple of drinks, it fueled me more. After all, I can control how I feel with 1-5 beers. However, I know I need to stop, but being in the medical field I'm too embarrassed for AA or Detox centers.plus Im clostrophobic!! Im not sure how to start this but it seems what I am looking for!!Tags: None

Hey Cowgirl, here's what I did, I downloaded the book, and read it, it was so insightful, then, since we own a pharmacy and are in the alternative medical field also, I researched all the supplements....they really, really help! This site is amazing, livesaving, and great friends lurk around every corner! Go to chat whenever you can, and just keep reading and posting...there's so much help here...I just got fed up with feeling bad, you know, "sick and tired of being sick and tired"! I've moderated, slipped up, got back on the horse, and I'm determined to beat the Beast this year...I got here last March, and I've gotten so much better ever since, even with the slips, I've learned and learned from it... The powdered L-glut by MetRx taken at least 3 times a day, at first, really helps, esp. the late afternoon, after work dose...take it before you have a drink....if you are in the med. field, you know that alcohol turns to sugar in the bloodstream, so you need to cut sugar out for the cravings too, and the L-glut really helps get the sugar/yeast out of your system, and help you wanting more of both...there's a great 30 day thread, lots of great folks there, some ab's, some mods, but tons of support....feel free to PM me anytime!"Nobody can go back and start a new beginning, but anyone can start today and make a new ending"

Hi Cowgirl. I also drink to "control" my stress and sleep at night. Today is my first day AF, and it was a little easier than I thought it would be. I'm sure the roughest part will be the rest of the week, when I am back at work. I'm glad you found the site. I know it helps make this thing we are all going through a lot easier. It's nice to know we are not alone in this. Good luck to you, you will find a lot of friendship and support here. I'm here for ya, & rooting for ya!

Hello and Welcome
Hi justacowgirl, :welcome:
Before you stop drinking please check out the ?need help ASAP" section the top thread has warnings and tips on detox. Depending on how much you drink it can be dangerous not to mention very uncomfortable. Well done for taking the first step.

Welcome to MWO,
Tough has just about said it all, so not much for me to say except give yourself a chance and let your determination to control your drinking overcome the ease of succumbing to our ego and habits. I've found this site so very helpful. Everyone here is or has been in a similar position to you so there's a lot of understanding and no-one is judgemental.
So, prepare yourself for the wonderful journey to moderation / AF, then jump in and feel the difference day by day. You will love and respect yourself for every advance you make.
Oh, and please don't castigate yourself if/when you slip up. It's part of the journey.

I am new too so I will not give any advice except to say welcome to the family of friends. That's what it feels like for me - I have been scared to quit as I would be an outcast at social events but because of this community I feel that I am part of a better social event, I feel that I have a secret and it's a good one this time. You won't feel alone anymore - think of all the people here who are winning the battle and how you can too. Best Wishes, Turtle Dove.

Hi justacowgal, welcome! I know the thought process of using alcohol as a sleep aid. The thing is it doesn't really work since you have to get up a couple times a night (with beer!) or don't really get good sleep (with my wine). I take melatonin and 5htp which you can get from health/vitamin isle as natural sleep aids, and they do help especially after the first day or 2. Calms forte is recommended too to help relax. :welcome:The more we appreciate life, the more life appreciates and bestows us with more goodness.
