    Help to understand

On the eve of me commiting to a private rehab - NHS failed me and here in UK I don't have health insurance, if I took it out now I would not be covered anyways.

My question is I would like a link to some info for my parnte to explain why the alcoholic drinks even when it is destroying them. It's the most difficult thing he finds. He is not the sort to go to al anon and I just want to show him some literature.

    That's all.

Tomorrow I should be gone for three weeks.

    UK Blonde,

Much love on your journey- I look forward to hearing from the "new" you that you'll be working on....

The book that helped me understand MY brain is out of print, but was written by Susan Powter, called, "Sober and Staying That Way"... if you remember who Susan Powter is, she was a self-described obese mom, who lost weight by exercising and diet, and developed exercise videos that she'd sell late at night on tv, with a positive drill sergeant approach. She isn't a doctor, but does have a doctor's help with the bio-chemical explanation of alcoholism.

I wish you and you partner well... much love:heart:

Well, there are probably tons of books.

I tend to think of addiction more globally and liked Craig Nakken's book The Addictive Personality. I tihnk that addiction to any substance or behavior is a sign of something lacking psychological in the self, the proverbial "hole in the soul".

There also is a good book suggesting biochemical causes, Seven Steps To Sobriety, and excerpts can be found on this site. The author tends more toward nutritional deficiency causes. You know, alcoholism is linked with hypoglycemia.

My suspicion is that alcoholism is a much more complex and diverse problem than portrayed in society and particularly by groups like AA. There aren't a lot of definitive answers and it will be interesting to see the outcome of new studies that look into the brain and see what it is actually doing. Roberta has posted some interesting research on this. Check the research and books section of this site!

There is a lot of reading material.

You may also want to email determinatrix, wife of determinator, to see if any books helped her understand.

Ps I also liked the film When A Man Loves A Woman

Good luck ukblonde. Look forward to hearing your experience upon your return. Pain & Stress Center has some inexpensice pamplets and a small book on alcoholism explaining the addiction from the brain aspect. The program treats with amino acids and such. They have a website. Hope that helps.
