Hello! New and need advice, esp on supps

    :new:

    Hi everyone,

I just stumbled on MWO a few days ago. Dowloaded the book and read it right away. I think this really might be a plan that can work for me. I'm 32, have been drinking heavily for about four years (for me that means at least half a pint of vodka a day, sometimes more, rarely less). I have gained a lot of weight during my drinking years and have started to notice withdrawal if I go a full day with no alcohol (hands trembling, anxiety, etc.). I tried to quit cold turkey 2 weeks ago and I experienced the exact same symptoms so many of you here are describing!!! I COULD NOT sleep, I felt on edge, anxious, fidgety. That is my biggest concern. I have the will to not buy alcohol but the side effects of being AF are enough to make me want to drink a glass of wine to make it go away.

What I really want to know from you all is, do you find that the supplements mentioned in the book are key? I am completely willing to invest but I don't want to be a "sucker" and want to be sure this is the right thing to do, before I hastily spend hundreds of dollars on these supplements.

I am currently on Zoloft....have been on it for six years or so and it has always worked well for me. My dr. just upped my dosage to help me with this process. My dr. also gave me Campral, which I haven't started taking yet.

Thoughts? Suggestions? What has worked for you?

    Thanks in advance everyone--

    Jess

Hello! New and need advice, esp on supps

    Hi Jess and welcome!

The only supps I take are GABA and kudzu. I also listen to the CDs. Others will respond who take a lot more than I do and will tell you how they've helped. You're right to be wary about being a "sucker," but you've asked and you will get responses.

    Good luck!

Thanks so much, Nicole. Are the CDs available individually online? I am looking in the Health Store right now and haven't seen them sold individually yet. --Jess

        Jessica,

I believe in the supplements heartily, because our bodies are suffering nutritional deficiencies from the drinking. The amino acids are very helpful for withdrawal, as well as the GABA.

Kudzu does nothing for me and works wonderfully for others.

I am currently taking Campral, I don't notice any diff, but many others have and it helps to get brain chemistry back to normal quicker.

I am on my second week of Chantix, stop smoking pill, and am going to see if that in combo with the Campral help with the drinking urges, too.

Good luck to you!! and :welcome:

I am sure many others will weigh in on the supplements.

Thank you Cindy--when you say amino acids, what do you mean? I thought the GABA was amino acids? Are another one of the supplements amino acids as well? Sorry, trying to get to know all of the many supplements recommended. Thanks, Jess

Jessica, I don't think the CDs are sold separately. They are a package in that they are each different but you need to use them all. They wouldn't work separately.

Hello! New and need advice, esp on supps

                  Hi Jessica:
Here is my program and what worked for me (may not work for others):
I take the AllOne everyday. That has all the amino acids and vitamins to replenish what the alcohol has taken away.

The first month on the program I also took the L-Glut as it helped with the cravings and Kudzu to kill the alcohol "buzz", and Vitamin B for energy.

I am also on Topamax rather than Campral as it works to help you stop while you are still drinking (you have to be completely sober for Campral to work - I tried campral a couple times and it did not work for me).

Also, my first month, I took the Calms Forte religiously: 1 tablet every 3-4 hours and 3 tablets at night. It helped with the "anxious" feelings, nervousness and helped me sleep.

                  Hope this helps.
                  Peace,
                  Deb

                    Supps and CDs

                    Hi Jessica:

I started the program in January without reading the book or doing the supps initially ( I am a more traditionally trained nurse in the US and am a bit skeptical of herbal remedies). I found the support and drink tracker to be big motivators. At the end of January I ordered the book and the next day started "shopping" for the supps and Cd's and 6 weeks later I have to say the supps, CDs and Topomax have made a HUGE difference for me . . . like night and day, so I would definitely recommend them. I just can't believe the difference. I feel I have control over alcohol. I decide whether or not I am going to drink - no debate - it's almost not an issue. I am trying to lose weight, so it's "not on my diet" most days. But on some days and some occasions I would enjoy a glass of wine or two and I feel confident that I can manage that and I do. I still use the drink tracker and check in on the boards daily. This site is a great resource and you will not regret any advice given here.

I am not good at taking vitamins so I did made a few minor adjustments to the MWO plan:

                    1. I ordered liquid vitamins for some of the vits (based on tips from a MWO member). I keep those in the refrig and take those in the morning b/4 I go to work.

                    2. Altho I ordered the L-glut I haven't taken it, but I am doing mods; many of the ABS folks swear by the L-glut. I ordered and take everything else on RJ's list: All One, Vit B, Magnesium, Kudzu, Evening Primrose, Milk Thistle. I didn't order the Calms Forte because I too am on an antidepressant and anxiety is not a big issue for me. I ordered the liquid vits and the All One from another site (I needed the AllOne w/o iron w/MWO doesn't carry); I would diffinetly order the Kudzu from MWO; I ordered all the others from MWO, and altho' I didn't compare on costs, MWO was the fastest on delivery.

                    3. I listen to the CD's faithfully ; I think they are one of the biggest factors of the program. After the first week its really not so time consuming.I ordered the 4 CD started set from MWO $99 I think.

                    4. I bought medication dispensers (the kind that have slots for 4x/day and allow you to pop out a day for travel) and set them up on Sunday night so that it's easy and I have them with me during the day in case I forget the morning pills etc.

Its a lot of supps, but many are only for the first six weeks while you are recalibrating your system.

Hope this helps. Feel free to post or PM me if you have other questions

                        Jess,

The AllOne has all the Aminos in it already.

If you choose to go with a multi-vit, then you need to add aminos.

                            :welcome:

In the "Just Starting Out" there is a daily ODAT (one day at a time) thread. You should jump in there every day. Lots of supportive people there.

Good luck and don't give up giving up. It often takes a few tries.

Hello! New and need advice, esp on supps

                              I am new here too...

I was prescribed Campral a year ago. Taken alone, it did nothing for me. I hate AA and crowds of strange people. The men were alwys flirting and the women were kinda in a clique,,,I felt I did not "belong" again...Also no sponsors were around. I felt hopeless, so I quit.

I found the GABA today at GNC, but had no luck with the Kudoz, none in my neck of the woods, so I guess i will order online.

I feel very at ease here already in just these past days. I look forward to recieving the CD's..

                              (((Wishing you luck & happiness)))
