    Life or death...

Being in recovery is not a game this is not dungeons and dragons.
It is my life or my death, plain and simple.
I have a disease that kills more people than all other disease's combined, yes combined.
    alcohol poisening,
    Suicide,
    Liver disease,
    Homicide,
    Drunk driving (self)
    Drunk driving (others)
    The list go's on.
I have to admit I AM AN ALCOHOLIC I HAVE A DISEASE.
I can not cure it I can only treat it today.
    Half measures avail me nothing.
S**t or get off the pot, do something about it now.
    Go to A/A meetings.
Read anything about your disease you can (if you had cancer you would check out every book the library had to offer)
I dont meen to preach but it really is LIFE OR DEATH.
    Love,
    John S.

    Life or death...

    Hi John S.
This is life or death to you - I can tell by your post. How long have you been sober? How is it going for you? Good I hope. Congrats to you - as I know personally it is no small victory.
No this certainly isn't dungeons or dragons either - thank goodness.

There are many different types of people who post on MWO - Thats why it's called My way out - I hope you find a community of My Way Out folks to help you in your walk. I know for me - it's been a big part of my recovery. There are people here just discovering what that journey is going to be for them. Sounds like you might have some experience. Thanks for joining us in the journey - as you know - it is a process of learning from each others lessons in the walk.

    Peace to you

      Life or death...

John, excellent post. I agree everyone should read anything they can get there eyes on. It's certainly help me not only stay sober, but made my decision to go ABs or Mod much easier. I decided based on some of the things I read that that poison would never pass through these lips again.

I think alot people are afraid of what they will find out if the researched this sh*t. I did alot of research to see how much damage I may have done so I could figure out what supplements I should take. Some scary stuff out there. But the great news is that so much (and in most cases all) of it is reversible if you stop drinking. The body is very resilient and has amazing abilities to recover.

      Good luck on your journey.

        Life or death...

        Point taken

Sorry if I came across a little preachy,
Another person in the programme decided to take the easy way out and commit suicide.
Thats why I was a little curt.
I have been sober for 171 days and I do what ever it takes to stay that way.
I have made 2 A/A meetings today on my day off work (this is not bragging this is what I do to stay sober). As I said half messures avail me nothing.
        Love,
        John S.

          Hi Staying sober,
I totally agree with what you said. I have been trying to find a way to stay sober for a long long time..thinking there's a magic pill or something that will help me refrain from over drinking because I loved the stuff so so much. I just didn't see how I could live with out it in my life but I just wanted to be able to control it..Well ....last wednesday I realized there is no controlling it for me...I left my house Wednesday morning..after waking up on the couch still drunk from the night before...got in my car decided I wouldn't go to work that day so I called in sick..went straight to the store and bought some more buze and started all over again....that afternoon I woke up in my car on the side of the road by a police officer..I don't know where I was, what I had been doing. Didn't have any idea what time it was...The officer said he thought I was dead because he couldn't feel a pulse so he called an ambulance ..I was muddy from head to toe. My car was muddy outside and inside..and had been wrecked. I don't remember anything except getting stuck and someone pushing me out...I don't remember if it was a man or a women but it seams like it might have been a man in a white truck but I couldn't swear to that. That's crazy. I could have killed someone or killed myself or both. What the hell was I thinking? Crazy. I have a broken brain...I don't think normal...Needless to say I went to jail..which is my 2nd DUI in 3 yrs.
I understand every word you are saying..I feel excatly the same way. It's a life or death situation. If I had the money I would admit myself into rehab but I don't so I have to do whatever it takes to stay sober and that means AA..the 12 steps..the supps. what ever...I have to let it go...I don't know why I drank the way I did but It's not an option for me any more ever. I have to do whatever to stay sober. Thanks for the post...sorry to ramble on.
          With love,

I don't think you came off preachy at all. Sorry to hear about someone commiting suicide. Were they a friend? Sound like they had more problems than just alcoholism.

Congrats on your 171 days!! Wow that's amazing! You are an inspiration. After all this time, are you still having cravings? Do you take any supplements at all? Do you just follow AA?

Just wondering what your plan is/or was.

            Thanks for sharing.

              Some U.S. stats

How can alcohol be blamed for 100,000 deaths each year?

5% of all deaths from diseases of the circulatory system are attributed to alcohol.
15% of all deaths from diseases of the respiratory system are attributed to alcohol.
30% of all deaths from accidents caused by fire and flames are attributed to alcohol.
30% of all accidental drownings are attributed to alcohol.
30% of all suicides are attributed to alcohol.
40% of all deaths due to accidental falls are attributed to alcohol.
45% of all deaths in automobile accidents are attributed to alcohol.
60% of all homicides are attributed to alcohol.

and death caused by alcohol have almost doubled in the U.K since 1991
These are the sobering facts(no pun intended)

I take a multi vitimin each day.
                I do go to A/A. 3 to 4 times a day.
I do from time to time have cravings (more like urges)
I treat them as any other thought that cross my mind I recognize them do some mindfull exercise's and move on.
Mindfullness exercise's are a god send since I read and practiced them in group.

Please call your state addiction services.
I was able to get in a rehab without $$$
Montana has a wonderful Dept of addiction services.
Your state may have one also.
Also talk to your Doctor to see if a detox/rehab is connected with the local hospital sometimes they are.
                    Good luck.

                      Life or death...

Hi John, I appreciate you taking the time to post and inform all of us on the seriousness of this addiction. Those statistics are staggering. So often, we read posts regarding hangovers, depression and outrageous embarrasment. None of those things is pleasant to deal with, but the real bottom line is that this is either now, or will become a life or dealth issue for all of us, unless we stop! Alcoholism is a progressive disease, period!

I am sorry about the loss of your friend. I too lost a friend/alcoholic to alcohol a few years ago, my ,other died almost two years ago from years of alcohol abuse. It was not a gentle death. And a year and a half ago, three member of a family that we knew, mother and two young children died when they were hit by a drunk driver at 7PM in the eveing while crossing the street in a crosswalk with a red light! No this is not a game, this is life and death.

I too am working hard at my sobriety. I appreciate your honest and frank approach! I hope you stick around and keep posting!!

                          Life or death...

Scary posts! And very eye-opening! Although I don't think you can scare me anymore than I already am. When I quit drinking 2/4, I knew there was no starting again. Not even one drink, ever. My body told me and this time I had to listen. So far I haven't had many urges, but I'm feeling one now and I'm going to pop my three Kudzu!
