I would love to hear from some of you
I have never done anything like this before (looking for support on the internet), and I sent a message earlier today (my first ever). I have noticed that those who posted just before and after me have gotten replies....and I haven't yet. Don't know if I am posting incorrectly, or just have a boring post . Anyway, I hope to hear from someone....just figured I would give it another try.... -

Hi Bak310
I just got on - but can't stay. My daughter's before-bed book is calling.
You will get support here.
I started in Feb - just reading then started posting in March. I was a mess when I got here, but ordered and read the book and got the supplements and CD's.
I'm doing pretty good. My goal was moderation and not abstinence. I seem to be handling that well. However, beer is my favourite drink and I'm scared to try it yet. Like popcorn - never just one.
Have you read the book? You can order it to be mailed out or download it and print it right away.
It made such a tremendous difference in my life, I'm still in awe.
This program is hard work, but worth it if this is what you truly want.
Keep reading and posting - we're here for you.

Hi Bak310, I'm sorry! I saw your post, & should've at least said welcome! I didn't reply because you asked about campral & I've never had it...So I don't feel qualified to answer your question. But Welcome!!
Glad you found us, stick around someone with some more knowledge will be along shortly, I'm sure... Hugs, Judie
PS I'm taking topa, Have been for about 4 mo. Just sticking to 100 mg, seems to be working for me so far. I'm moderating and doing better than I could have ever dreamed!

Hi Bak and welcome!
I've been on the program on and off since Dec. I started full force May 1st. I made the mistake that many of us have in the beginning and didn't take many aspects of the program to heart. Then I kind of abandoned most of the program for a couple months and ended up right back where I started. Drinking way too much on a daily basis. I just started Campral on Friday and it seems to be working fine. I wasn't really having too much trouble the first couple weeks because I was extremely motivated to curb this problem before it got more out of control. I started the Campral anyway and last night was one of the first times this month I have thought about drinking wine. I'm not sure if it was the Campral or not, but I just shook off the feeling and didn't act on it. Sorry you didn't get responses earlier. I work all day and try to check in on the board, but sometimes things get hectic at work and I don't have time to check back.

Hi bak310,
Welcome to MWO! I don't know too much about campral, I take topa. The one thing I do know about campral though is that you are suppose to abstain for a period of time, I believe for about a week, before starting it. I have NO idea if this could be the cause of your upset stomache or not, just a thoght.
As for the rest of the program...the cds, the supps, and the exercise, I do them all! I have been on the program for seven weeks with great success. It does take work, and dilligence on your part, but most certainly can be done!
Read and post often. There is a wealth of information and support for you here! Again, welcome, and Best of Luck as you begin your journey!!

Bak, I don't know if you're aware of this, but you are supposed to be abstinent for a time before starting Campral. I think I've heard a week. I think it may lose some effectiveness if you do not use it in this way.

thanks for the reply. I have been on Campral for almost two weeks. After a week, I started having stomach problems but am dealing with that and hoping it goes away. Unfortunately, I haven't noticed too much help with the Campral, but I am hopeful that it is kicking in (now that my stomach is reacting.) Anyway, thanks again, and good luck!!

Bak, maybe you should talk to your doc about stopping the Campral and being abstinent for a few days and then starting again. I'm not sure that you are getting the benefit out of it if you didn't have a period of abs first.

Hi Bak!
Welcome!
Wanted to respond to the tummy trouble. I take topa, not the Campral, so not sure about the campral causing the trouble. Are you taking the other supps? The all one? kudzu? l-glut? I'm telling you, I still get some lower GI issues (sorry if TMI!: ) every now and again, but not nearly as badly as when I started all these meds a few months ago. Many people complain of the supps causing stomach upset at first but it settles down.
You certainly may want to bring it up with your dr. if you feel it's a problem or are getting dehydrated, etc., but I think a lot of our tummies can relate to going from being pickled with the alcohol to these new healthy changes
Take care!

I just found this site, and haven't investigated the other meds/sups yet. I just know that aa is not the answer for me, and so I am open to trying new things. I am seeing an addiction counselor for the second time tomorrow. i saw her the first time two weeks ago. She suggested the Campral. I am embarrased to see her and tell her that i am still drinking, but I will be honest. It is so weird, because the drinking is so removed from everything else in my life. I am married, raising two great kids, work.....and basically live a very honest and clean life....except for the alcohol. I don't hang out with drinkers or anything, simply drink in the evening alone (and in secret). It blows my mind that I can't just let this go. It is like an obsession/compulsion more than anything. I don't even enjoy the buzz all that much. anyway, I am rambling. I would love to hear from some who have had some time with success. I so want to be in that boat.
Thanks for listining all.

I know that obsession/compulsion feeling all too well. A lot of it is habit and trying to find other things to replace it with. It gets easier in time, believe me! The first 30 days are the toughest as far as dealing with the obsessive feelings. I'm glad you are on the Campral, i've had much success with it. It made it much easier to abstain than in previous attempts. You have to be ready for it though. Your heart must truly want this to make it work. It doesn't just happen. Explore your reasons for wanting to quit. Is there anything holding you back? There are a lot of emotions and feelings of loss to tackle initially that can make the commitment to this a challenge. Stay close, keep reading and let us know how you are doing. gina

Sounds like you are a great candidate to join our boat!
You want to change, are seeking help via the counsellor and this board, and are open to something new.
Just keep reading, Bak. The first day I found the program (beginning of Feb) I ordered the book. Started the supps shortly thereafter, got my dr appt for March and started the topa. I have cut my drinking in half! With goals of cutting back even a bit more. I'm a moderation kind of gal, many others choose to abstain. It's up to you. I just needed to cut out the drinking to oblivion BS and sitting by myself at night after putting the kids to bed and drinking 1 to 2 bottles of wine FOR NO REASON. So far, so good. Hubby is shocked and amazed!! I had tried and failed many times to cut back on my own, only to fall back into the old habits.
Lots of components to this program. You'll soon become familiar! Keep reading and asking questions.
Great to have you here!

It is so amazing to hear from you all. I think, in all honesty, when I began the Campral, it gave me an excuse to drink, because " well, I just won't want to once it kicks in". Crazy thinking, I know, but that is what my mind does vis a vis drinking. I so much want to not drink, because it is living with a monkey on my back. The secrecy, the regrets. And the pain I know it is causing my family, because they do know. I don't think I can consider moderation right now, because I do recognize that once I start to drink, I seem to want to continue way past the point that is close to normal. I also have noticed that if I can avoid drinking between that 5pm hour and dinner time, I loose the urge completely once I have eaten. I even feel relieved that I did not drink, and soooo happy to be able to enjoy the evening watching tv, reading or what ever. You would think that would be enough motivation to get me through the hour or two to get there, but for some reason, at that magic drinking hour, all reason seems to go out the window. Well, I am going to really try tonight, and see what happens. I need to purchase the book to get more info. Can I get it a any barnes and noble store? Also, it helps to know that if I can get through a certain number of days, it gets easier. I need to hear that, because I find after several days of abstinence, I tend to let myself think "I can't go on like this forever", giving me another reason to give in and drink. How long until it isn't so much of a struggle? Thanks again for all the advice, support and info
