Help please - IT challenged newbie

I only bought this stupid computer to be able to access this site.

The security won't let me download ActiveX when I try to log into the chat room.

I can get in from my brother in laws mac so we spent most of last night comparing the security settings but still couldn't make it work. Borrowing his computer isn't really an option.

Has anyone else had this problem? Or any ideas on what I could do?

I don't know how to change security settings, but don't you need Java to use chat? Try downloading that and see what happens. It worked for me.

Do you have a firewall set up and running? (I sure hope you do!!)

Very likely the firewall is set up to block downloads of ActiveX.

Loppy ~ welcome!

Yes, I agree with Cindi. It most likely is your firewall blocking the download. But that's a good thing. You need a firewall. So what you have to do is turn the firewall off just long enough to complete the download and then turn the firewall back on.

You shouldn't have to do this every time you want to download something, but I have had to do that on my pc a few times. It's just very important to turn that firewall back on though, so don't skip that step.

What kind of error are you getting and is it a MAC or Windows computer?

If windows, go into:
Tools
Internet Settings
select the 'Security Tab'
check the security level - if it's high, it may block ActiveX. You should be able to switch to low security or customize it and enable ActiveX downloads.

Thanks for the advice everyone.

I have a windows laptop. I tried resetting the security level to low and then loading activeX but it keeps giving me the error message " windows has blocked this software because it cannot identify the author".

I haven't tried turning off the firewall because I couldn't see how to. Did I mention that I am really IT challenged. I get my security from the cable company, does this make a difference?

I have managed to do something odd, because windows now insists that it opens a separate window for MWO because of its different security settings.

Oh well for now I'll just keep reading and replying to threads. I've never visited a chat room before, was rather looking forward to it.

Hi Loppy. You think you're challenged...I can't even figure out how to start a new thread! I know I did it once, but seem to have forgotten. Today I bought a "mouse" for the new computer I bought to join MWO.

Loppy, I am going AF for the first time in about 10 years starting on Monday. I have Antabuse, have bought lots of "healthy beverages" and told my new husband that I was doning it to lose weight. Can't really open up to anyone I know. Hope someone will join me, or at least give me some ideas in the first few days. Scared but excited!
