Does Anyone Have Any Thoughts on Antabuse

I am getting quite frustrated (and scared) about my relapses. This has been going on literally for years. I once took antabuse for six months and in led me to several years of being sober. But after several years of being sober I drank again for all the usual reasons (this time will be different, etc. -- but obviously, it was not).

Again, I took antabuse but the experience was a mess. I thought I could take it on a stop and start basis as a way to "learn" moderation. Well, I gave up the antabuse and not the booze.

But I do believe my NEED and DESIRE to stop drinking are so much stronger than at any time before. I believe that AL is taking over and ruining what could be a nice life. But I am scared that I might never stop, so am considering talking to my doctor about taking antabuse once again.

      Matten,

I am taking Antabuse for the first time, Matthen, so you are way ahead of me on your knowledge and understanding of the mechanics of stopping and starting to drink again.

I hope I never ever drink again. EVER.

I am going to take Antabuse long term, health allowing. Because my experience has been that many times while taking it I may have caved. AB takes that out of the equation for me and allows me to let my "saner" side stay in control.

Right now my saner side is not strong enough to always beat the addictive side. Until it is, I am staying on Antabuse.

      Just my experience.

Sometimes I feel guilty that I have to resort to AB to achieve this but mostly I am just grateful it is an option I can take.

      Love,
      Cindi

Matthen, Do what you have to do to remain AF. If it takes Antebuse then use Antebuse.
I didn't have to go that route but believe me, I wouldn't hesitate if thats what it took. The relief of depression and guilt alone would have made it worth it.

Thank you Cindi and RN -- I have decided definitely to do the antabuse. I can't hurt me anywhere near as much as the physical and psychological pain of this constant binge drinking. Thank you so much for your clear push in the right direction. I need to get out of this hell. Today is 3 days sober and I still feel physically weak and queasy and mentally right now I am a bit of a mess. So thank you for being here. I think that I am greatly encouraged at the moment believing that for me, there might finally be some way out for me. Thank you.

I considered AB a few years back, but I haven't gone down that route. Reason being I know if I want to have a drink AB would not stop me and I would do it despite knowing I would be very ill and perhaps die.

I decided to tackle the reasons and cravings - using a new approach to life, myself, using AA, counselling and Campral. That way I shouldn't get to the point where I just go ahead.

Matt - talk to your doctor about taking Campral and Antabuse together. The Antabuse will prevent you from drinking, but the Campral will help repair the imbalanced chemicals in the brain. I think that's what I'm going to do. Good Luck!

Matthen - I haven't tried antabuse but many here have and say it has worked. It worked for you before. Remember that the first week of AF is the toughest physically. Take it one day at a time, one hour at a time. Come here as often as you can and post. We have all been there and will help you and not judge you no matter what. After a couple of more days you WILL feel PHYSICALLY better. Keep the faith.

JLM - that is a good idea that I never thought of. Campral and AB in combination... I'm on Campral alone and it is working great for me. But if I was sliding then that would be a great option!

                    Matt,

There are several new drugs on the market, that are much better than Antibuse. I have been unsuccessful, with most of them due to lack of self discipline. Campral works for some people very well. It would have worked for me, but, it is a 3 time a day dose and once I would feel a little nauseous, would quit taking it. There is a injection called Vivitrol, which may work for you. However, I had a bad experience with it and spent the day in the ER getting an IV drip to re-hydrate. I am not going to knock the drug, though. I have always had a very low tolerance for medication and that is probably why I got sick. None of them are a miracle cure, unfortunately. I am struggling right along with you.

Good Luck and hang in there,
                    Don't quit trying and I won't

                      Matten,

I tried Campral, Naltrexone, and Topa. I drank on all three.

I don't drink on Antabuse. My alcoholism is definitely a thinking problem not just a drinking problem

Do whatever it takes and good luck.

Hang in there with me Matt, I'm on Day 3 also. Right now, I'm drinking VERY sweet tea, gobbling kudzu and fighting to keep my hands off the fully stocked wine rack that sits in my kitchen. My husband's pride and joy and even though he can drink it "M" he thinks I just need to use my will power and self control to keep it at "normal" drinking. I will probably stuff an antabuse down my throat pretty soon. 1/2 of one tab smothers my beasty cravings in pure terror for 4 days. I can't touch a drop. It's not just retching your guts out. It's turning glowing beet red and having my heart pound so hard that I think it's The Alien trying to hatch. So, one tab a week, 4 weeks and then I have to stop taking it for a month or I get sick just from it. I am planning that with the help of MWO, I won't need it after one month.

Today, all of my buttons are getting pushed. Glad to be here:h

Does anyone know if it is true that with the exception of antabuse, the drugs all are designed reduce craving for alcohol. I heard on one that just neutralizes the effects of alcohol, so you can't get drunk and supposedly therefore lose your desire to drink?
