Trying hard but struggling a bit

    Hello everyone

I am feeling a bit better than a week or so ago, but still waiting for CDs and supps which I have ordered. I will have to be patient. Do people find the CDS and supps really help and are they effective without the Topa? I am not sure whether my ultimate goal is AF or if I will be able to moderate, but while waiting for the CDs, etc., I have been trying to cut down a bit. Probably not very impressive compared with some people here. Have managed 4 AF days in last week and a half (not consecutive days) and cut drinking by about one third of usual amount on other days. Still feeling some remorse about my behaviour when drunk, but beginning to feel I might find my way out. This place gives me hope.

    Hi Leolady,

Welcome. You will find lots of support here. I am new also. Just through reading posts, I think most people do supplements and CD's and not topamax. I haven't read many post about Topa but I am using it and find it helpful. I took it a year ago for a couple of months because a friend of mine took it for weight loss (yes, another character flaw of mine is vanity!) . At that time not only did I lose weight but I drank less, unintentionally. I just wasn't as interested. That was exactly the experiendce RJ describes in her book. This time I am taking it with supplements and using Topamax along with using this site. I am on day 18 AF. I bought CD's but admittedly haven't gotten into them (shame on me). I don't know why, just staying busy during the day and falling asleep at night easily. I tried them and I just fell asleep. Most people really swear by them so definately give them a try.

Topamax must be taken as directed as a slow taper to increase dose to minimize side effects. For me, it is worth it. Side effects are decreasing as time goes on. It still comes down to individual decision. Many don't need it and maybe I wouldn't need it if I had done the CD's properly!!!! I still "want" a glass of wine in the evening sometimes and it still comes down to motivation to be AF. I'm going to get those CD's out tonight!

Good luck Leolady and congrats on all you have accomplished in the past week!!! That is awesome!

      Leolady ~ Welcome!

I've never taken meds so I have no advise to offer there. But it is possible to quit without them. It's a personal choice. Give yourself a little more credit for cutting back on the booze so far. Any positive strives towards the right direction will help you in the long run. Perhaps this week, you can cut it back a little bit more. You are doing fine, so hang in there. I think once you start your supps and CDs you are going to feel much better.

It takes work. But it is so worth the multitude of rewards.

Post and read often. Best of luck to you. We are here for you.

Welcome LeoLady......guess what, I'm in the south of England too....and from your name, you sound like a leo??? If so, me too!!! I sent for the cds, (take about 2 weeks) and they are brilliant......they really help to keep me positive and that makes a big difference, especially in the early days. Taking the vits/supps regularly really helped as well. You've made a good start already, cutting down so well done and good luck on your journey!!! Janicexxx

Thanks for your support, everyone, it is much appreciated.

Yes, Janice, I am indeed a leo and it is good to hear from a fellow lion! You sound really positive and encouraging and that is a big help to me. Good luck on your journey, too. Sounds like you are doing very well.

            Hi Leo and welcome

I find that the cd's and supplements do work, especially at the beginning. I sometimes get lax about them and that's when the cravings seem to come back. Have had more alcohol free time in the past year than in the previous 10 years. Currently on Day 38 AF. Good luck on your journey.
