I felt its effects right away. Didn't stop drinking right away, but alcohol consumption cut in half during first week. Able to stop drinking at 200 mg relatively easily.

I had rather strong side effects first 3 days on 25 mgs, sleepiness, brian fog, severe sensitivity to noise, reduced appetite. Then all side effects decreased over last few weeks.

I'm now at 100 mg a day, have almost no brain fog, but still a little sleepiness, and decreased appetite, but that's OK, as I need to lose a few.

As far as it's effectiveness, I felt it from day one. Since, then I have reduced my daily intake by 60-75%. For example, last night I had only one neat medium pour of bourbon that lasted me 2 hours, and quite honestly I did not really really want it, and think I did so more out of pure habit than craving.(And hey, it was a Saturday night)

I will be starting my 6 week period of no alcohol when I hit what I feel is the optimum level of topamax for me. With each week that has passed, I feel better and better. If you had told me 3.5 weeks ago that I now would be taking 50mg of topamax in the morning and 50mg at night I probably would have said, "Yes and I'll be a walking Zombie".

In fact, I took it over an hour ago at breakfast and can barely tell now that i did. It just takes time, maybe months, for the body to adjust.

The first week at 25 mg, nothing..... frustrated. Then at week two when I upped to 50 mg, I felt the benefits, but also some side effects, but side effects were not too bad. Just a little tired, water tasted bad... wine didnt taste near as good, and one glass felt like I had three, so I found one to two was plenty...

        It really works.
