    Smoking >.<

I have decided to tackle the second biggest beast in my life, smoking!

Have reached 10 days AF and Im really happy about this but because I am still smoking I feel as if I am not quite where I want to be in terms of healthy living.

I want to kick this one into touch too, anyone else quit both at the same time or around the same time?

Im smoking far far less than I was when I was drinking so thats a positive but I want to call time on it now.

    Id appreciate some advice :thanks:

Nia :goodjob: wanting to quit smoking as well. I have kicked the habit but not at the same time as trying to go AF. It was a long time ago but I have heard from friends recently that have given up that the nicotine patches are very helpful aid - also the gum

Wishing you all the success in your quest

      way to go

Hi Nia! Congratulations for being AF for 10 days. Keep it up.:goodjob:

Great to hear about your resolve to quit smoking. I was a pack-a-day smoker for about 18 years before quitting cold-turkey one fine January morning last year. It sure has been the best decision of my life. I was walking around in a daze for the first couple of weeks of my quit but slowly, started getting comfortable with my ex-smoker status.

I quit smoking long before getting freed from alcohol. Imo, the key to quitting smoking is education. The understanding that we are in the clutches of a deadly chemical addiction and not some 'nasty habit', that we are addicts for life and the addiction can only be arrested and not wished away and how there is no such thing as 'just one smoke' is essential for embarking on the journey to smobriety.

Even the physiological and psychological withdrawals follow a set pattern. As you have observed, alcohol is a major trigger for smoking, so staying away from alcohol during the initial days of your smoking quit

First, read all you can about all aspects of smoking and quitting smoking. There are some good quit sites too on the Net like whyquit & quitnet ( hope I'm not violating forum rules) which helped me internalise the deleterious effects of smoking and strengthened my resolve to stay on course.

      All the best.

I'm just starting Day 3 AF, but I REALLY want to quit smoking!! I've smoked too much for way too long... BTW - my last "significant" quit (only 5 mos.) was Greatly helped by the site already mentioned, quitnet. Amazing support (like here). I like this gadget they have, too, where it keeps tracks of cigs not smoked along with $$$ saved. After I saved some, I would buy myself a little present! Nice incentive.

This may be an excuse, but I feel like I need a bit more time (maybe just a week or two) AF before diving in to quitting smoking.

GOOD LUCK! You CAN do it.

          Hello there,

If you want, check out my thread on quitting smoking in the fitness section. I quit 4 months ago today!!! I've had a couple of slips--all related to while I was drinking--so I just finished up 30 days AF!

I had to give up the beer, because I ALWAYS drank and smoked at the same time--NEVER one without the other. I did read some great books, and bought some hypnotherapy cds and motivational/subliminal/affirmation cd's. It's still hard at times, but it is getting easier. So much easier when I'm not drinking--so I hope that helps you!!!

            Hi Nia,

I'm on day 9 AF now, and I quit smoking at the same time, so 9 days cig free too.

I was determined to try and tackle both at the same time, as they are like a juxtaposition to me.

I listen to hypnotherapy CD's for it, and I am also on the nicorette sweets.

I honestly do not want a fag, but I know if I had a beer then I would without doubt. The nicorettes are helping, and I am having quite a lot a day...

I'm also scared that if I had a fag, i will think f**k it and want a drink!

The Paul Mckenna book is good, loads of good techniques. And the Allen Carr easyway book is also quite good, but I'm sure you've probably read this as most people have!

            Cheers

Thankyou to everyone for you replies and advice.

I have a book by Kristina Ivings, I read it a couple of weeks ago, before I decided to go AF and it was really good. Going AF wasnt even on the agenda for me then but it has sort of taken over my decision to quit smoking.

              (if that makes sense)

I'll read it again and see if I feel inspired.

              Thank you again

                Hi Nia
I went to the doctor and got champix, unfortunately didnt read the instructions and messed up, it is supposed to stop you smoking, but it actually stopped me craving a drink
Im going to go back this week and ask if I can start again
I beleive it is called Champral in US (well someone on the forum told me)
I smoke so many that the doctor was willing to put me on it for 3 months!

I quit smoking 1 month b-4 I quit drinking. The first 3 months were a little rough - but now that I am beginning my 7th month AF and my 8th month Nic Free - it was well worth it just to go through both WD together! I actually think it helped me in some ways - because when I was feeling like total sh!t - I didn't know for sure which to blame it on - which actually helped take away the "fear" factor.

Now that I am down the road a ways - I feel SO MUCH healthier.

Good luck. Also - the sites doubter mentioned are really great along with everything he/she posted!
AF since Jan. 1, 2008 .... It all began right here
