Just a little advice needed. I haven't been on the boards for a while and also admit that I haven't conquered my battle with AL yet. I have been trying to taper off AL for the past week but have somewhat failed after indulging in a bottle and a half of wine last night!! So my question is has anyone ever just stopped AL after drinking a bottle of wine a night? Have you had any bad side effects? I have researched withdrawal on the net and am really afraid of getting the DTs. I don't feel I drink enough to develop the DTs as hangover wise I just feel really tired and suffer from sweating a little :blush:. I did go to my docs a while back but he advised me to just taper off AL which obviously doesn't work for me! I'm not asking for medical advice as I know noone can give me that on here, just other peoples experiences of just stopping on a similar amount to what I drink. Thanks XXXXX

ADVICE PLEASE ANYONE???
Hi Seto
I used to be able to stop from one day to the other until very recently. My poison of choice is beer, (5.4 proof) and a 'normal day' for me would be between 6 and 8 12 oz cans or bottles a night, so I was probably around the same as a bottle of wine daily plus a little more I guess.
Although I did this daily for years, if one day I managed to go AF basically my withdrawal symptoms would be minor or nothing at all.
However I have noticed in about the last 6 months this has changed, and these days I need to taper of over a few days- e.g I might go on a 2 day binge where I might have 8 cans each day, then on day 3 I will be shaky, nervous and basically unable to function, so I will have 4 cans over the day just to be able to get up and get through the day. On day 4 I will probably be OK just having a few sips every hour or two, therefore making 2 or 3 cans last the whole day. By day 5 I should be able to stop.
Reading this in black and white is really scary- and makes me realise just how ill I have become.
Well Onwards and Upwards day 3 AF now.
Good Luck.

ADVICE PLEASE ANYONE???
Hi Seto - I drank at least a bottle of wine a night and I am on say 6 AF right now. I feel better than I did the first few days. I had no idea how many toxins build up in your body after drinking that much for a prolonged period! My body is kind of freaking out. I still have a bit of a dull headache and kind of feel blah, but it is worth it. I simply cannot moderate. Period. I HAVE to go cold turkey. One glass only leads to more with me unfortunately. Good luck and glad you are back. You have friends here and we are all struggling in our own ways!

ADVICE PLEASE ANYONE???
:new:
Hi, just stumbled across this site today, boy I could have done with you guys months ago.
I have been a heavy drinker for 4 years now and tried to go AF at the start of this year when I accidently found out what alcohol withdrawal could do to you. I had an early start and a long drive for work and was only an hour into my trip when I started feeling faint, this feeling wouldn't go away, and I actually thought I was going to die on the side of the road. As I sat there vomiting my guts out, I remembered about my stash of beer in the back seat. I had a beer and within half an hour I started to feel better. It was terrifying. When I returned home I went to the doctor and got some diazipam to help with my attempt at going AF. My symptoms were now involuntary eye twitchs and massive panic attacks.
I was alcohol free for a couple of weeks and foolishly thought that perhaps I could have the odd beer after work. This of course wasn't the case and I became dependant on al. again. Anyway I hit rock bottom yesterday when I got sent home from work because I was drunk, to be honest I don't even remember going to work, could have had something to do with the 16 beers.
So here I am, I have a meeting with the bosses tomorrow morning, and I had better go to the Dr. for some more diazipam as I am not looking forward to those awful withdrawal symptoms.
But now I have found your site I'm sure I can get the support I so desperately need. It's time I put my big girl pants on. :grannypants: I hope they fit.

ADVICE PLEASE ANYONE???
Seto,
Glad to see you back. How is your new job?
As I and others posted before to you, there are many who have stoped drinking suddenly, with their consumption at way more than a bottle of wine per night. I don't know how many years you have been at this level, but the conclusion when you posted this question before I think was JUST STOP DRINKING NOW.
The decision is up to you. There are no guarantees. It seems likely that your withdrawal symptoms will be similar to KBCE.My life is better without alcohol, since 9/1/12. My sobriety tool is the list at permalink 236 on the toolbox thread under monthly abstinance.

ADVICE PLEASE ANYONE???
Zeppie,
:welcome: I am so sorry about what happened but glad it did. Driving to work so drunk you don't even remember it is hugely scary. Hugely.
Get on the withdrawal meds and start the process. Meanwhile, I would download RJ's book and read it. There is a ton of great information in there about supplements, exercise, etc.
And of course, keep reading and posting. People here will support you anyway they can.
Seto,
Are you drinking a small bottle a night or a large one? A small bottle has 5 drinks and a large one 10.
I can't advise, really, but many have quit cold turkey at the level you are. However, like Marbella has found, it also depends on your body and what shape it is in. If there is anyway to get some Librium or Ativan for 5 days, I would do it. It will help. If not, you may have to try cold turkey and see how it goes. If so, make sure you are with people all the time for the first 3 - 4 days. Seizures are not to be toyed with
Much luck!! I know it is hard to quit but it sure is worth it!!
Love,

ADVICE PLEASE ANYONE???
Hi Seto, Im going 'cold turkey' as of today and have no idea what the next few days will have in store..
Ive got the shakes so bad today that im finding it difficult to type this.
I reached rock bottom yesterday.. had 4 bottles of wine.
Feel absolutely dreadful.
Thelast time I tried going AF, I had cold sweats and was really irritable and jumpy.. so I guess Im expecting the same thing again.?I am playing all the right notes... But not necessarily in the right order.....?

ADVICE PLEASE ANYONE???
Hi Seto,
I was drinking more than you by the sound of it, went cold turkey and had no big problems - just felt crappy for about a week, nothing serious.
If you're worried, maybe go back to the doc and say you can't taper down and see if he'll prescribe something to help you through the first few days?sigpic
AF since December 22nd 2008

Please take care- that is an awful lot to be drinking then try going cold turkey.
I know your doctor is crap but it might even be worth going to the A and E department and getting something to help you come of it, or even having a few sips every hour until the worse passes.
RJ has put some info in the sticky at the top of the Need Help ASAP thread- might be worth reading. https://www.mywayout.org/community/f7...wal-13412.html
I did not know too much about withdrawal before coming here- please be careful- I think having a half glass every hour is preferable to serious DTs if you cannot get medication.

ADVICE PLEASE ANYONE???
Hi Seto, I was drinking a bottle of wine a night and more at weekends. I stopped suddenly after an almighty binge and following that felt ill (sick, headache and yuk) for a week. The following few weeks I was plagued with anxiety although that seems to have more or less gone now. Overall, I feel so much better.
Zeppie 2, I also am unable to moderate. I hope that you can get the diazapam and come here for lots of support.
Chelle - PLEASE BE CAREFUL and listen to what marbella says.
Lots of love and luck to all of you!Living now and not just existing since 9th July 2008

ADVICE PLEASE ANYONE???
Seto,
I was on a bottle of wine per night on average (sometimes more, sometimes less.) I quit cold turkey on Tuesday and since have been very tired and had a dull headache the entire time. I am hoping this gets better. I also find that I am on EDGE, big time. Also hoping that gets better. I am using the MWO supps and have been listening to the Hypno CDs...my issue isn't craving, so far it's just that I don't feel that great. I still wake up feeling kinda hungover. blah.
But again, this is only day six for me. I know nothing lasts forever, and I am sure as time goes on I will feel better.
Good luck
