    Just Hang UP!!

    I ran across this:

"Temptation begins by capturing your attention. What gets your attention arouses your emotions. Then your emotions activate your behavior, and you act on what you felt. The more you focus on ?I don?t want to do this,? the stronger it draws you into its web.

Ignoring a temptation is far more effective than fighting it. Once your mind is on something else, the temptation loses its power. So when temptation calls you on the phone, don?t argue with it, just hang up!"

(From article: We Move toward Our Focus: by Rick Warren)

I know this idea has been said many times here - but one more time won't hurt!!

Savon --- thanks for posting that --- the more we understand how the temptation of AL works and how best to deal with it, the more successful we will be. We need to train ourselves to recognise what is happening early enough to deal with it rather than give in.:thanks:

Ignoring the temptation works every time for me. Over the last ten years or so of trying to stop drinking I always used to have a fight with temptation, you know, the voice in your head, the yes I will/ no I won't drink sort of thing and the more I fought it the stronger it got. Now by distracting my mind with all sorts of things it soon fades into nothing.

Cool, I like that idea and will have to keep it in mind. As a mother I've trained myself to ignore whining and tantrums......I'm going to hang up and ignore AL

              Savon,
I love that and it's easy to remember. How is Largo? I lived in St.Petersburg from age 4-11. I love the Gulf Coast of Florida; it is so serene. kriger

Thanks Savon, that is great advice.
I use a similar sort of analogy for training my dogs it is "Ignore bad behaviour and reward good" In other words don't get into a fight with them!

Am I the only one who has trouble "hanging up"? The thought of having a drink came into my head about 11:00 a.m. today. It has been there all day. I have the day off from work, and have been doing many pleasant things. I keep doing things which I really enjoy, but it keeps creeping back in. I am sure I won't drink today, but that thought just keeps hanging out there.

Sunbeam, you're not alone. I've found since trying to have AF days, and finding this site, drinking seems to be on my mind ALL day long! Not craving, but remembering to take the supps, checking in here, wondering how I'll fight the temptation at the dinner hour, etc. etc. The fight is what has taken over me I suppose. Does this sound familiar to anyone else? ... and does it lessen as time goes on? ... I hoping so ... I'm almost obsessing with it.
