I have noticed it even more since I have become AF. Drinking is very romanticised. Lovely stem ware, the tinkling of ice in the glass, the sound of corks popping and of ale being poured into frosty glasses with a frothey head just spilling over the edge. No wonder young folks want to start. Should show people's blood shot eyes and head shoved into the camode while purging their guts up, jaundiced skin, extended abdomens due to liver disease. Overdrawn checkbooks, and the heart ache of the loved ones who have been hurt by over-consumption. Oh... I could go on and on. Magazines, bill boards, newspapers, radio, TV. Should be banned from tele just like cigarettes. OPPS, bit of a rant here.

I live in an inner urban area (think close in tall houses with teeny tiny lawns in front) which neither has a lot of bars, nor billboards. Even on the bus, I think they ban AL ads. So I don't see much on my daily routes. I pretty much only watch news on TV, so no Beer ads there (Do beer drinkers not watch news?) and I think that liquor is still banned on US TV.
What drives me NUTS is medical ads on TV. Apparently all people who watch Evening News have "Restless Leg Syndrome", or Alzenheimers, or early bone loss, which can always be fixed by an attractive older woman with a warm voice, and then a fast talking doctor giving warnings "People who take this pill may suffer death. Please warn your doctor if you suffer early forms of death which may include breathing, heartbeat, or vision".
And what drives me NUTS this month is political ads. Here in Oregon, Obama will win, as did Kerry and Gore. It's a Pacific Coast state made almost entirely of people who moved here. Apparently, people who move are Dems, and people who stay put are Pubs. Go figure. Oregon doesn't count, only 9 electoral votes, and no candidates will visit us in this election cycle (although we managed to be key for Obama in the Primary, and that felt good.)
We have a very tight Senate race between our incumbent Republican and a no-name Democrat. If Oregon changes a Senator, that's one more for the 66 needed for a Dem supermajority for 2009, breaking the Senate gridlock. Our Senator, Gordon Smith, is in the odd position of needing about 15% of Obama voters to support him in November to retain his incumbency. It's really unknown how many people in Oregon will vote a split ticket. I think it's pretty unusual for anyone to vote for one party for President, and a different party for Senator. I think less than 15%.
Both the Dems and Pubs are working to plaster our televisions with non-stop ads proclaiming among other things, Gordon Smith supports Obama, and Jeff Merkely doesn't know where Georgia is.
Sigh.

Boss.man, those ads are just going to get worse as November comes close, around here. Amazing how Gordon Smith can morph into a semi-democrat during election season.
I don't notice the AL ads around town, but there has been an upsurge in happy hours, and places offering great cheap food (one drink order required!) I realize that it doesn't have to be an AL drink, but they tend to offer deals on those too so it's a big temptation. Oh well, no more cheap food for us for awhile. I like how others have organized their days in order not to drink. For me the only part of the day that is hard is the evening, so avoiding triggers during that time is key for me. I'd love to know how other people avoid their biggest temptations, but perhaps that's another thread.

Al is indeed a big scam. Something that has become very clear being AF for a while. Part of fighting AL is learning how to spot your enemy. Let's say someone is going for a trip away, go to the airport. Bars, advertising, duty free. Get on the plane, more booze is served. Disembark, bars, advertising, licensed restaurants more duty free. Go to your hotel, more bars & restaurants pushing it. Get up to your room, no guesses as to what is in the fridge. So yes, you need to trust your inner strength & know AL is not critical to who you are.
