For all out there afraid to go to your doctor...JUST DO IT!

When I decided I'd had enough, I made an appointment with my GP. That was two weeks ago. I still haven't had an AF day, but I have literally cut my drinking in half (one bottle of wine a night). While I was in the exam room today, I was feeling really calm. The nurse came in to check my VS and looked @ my chart and asked, "So are you still just drinking occasionally?" I lied and said yes and then told her the reason for the visit was to increase my antidepressant. I felt like such a coward for not telling her the truth. So then my GP came in and asked what was going on with my Prozac. I was ready to lie to her too, have her adjust my meds and go on my merry way. I was soooooo scared! Then I just blurted out, "I definately need a change with my Prozac, but first I have something to tell you. I have a drinking problem." And then I just started sobbing. I told her how much I drank and for how long. It all just came pouring out. I told her about MWO and she thought both the book and the forum were wonderful tools. She prescribed the Antabuse and Topamax. She also highly recommended all the supplements suggested on this site. When we were done, she gave me the biggest hug and said, "Thank you so much for telling me. That was probably one of the hardest things you've ever had to do."
I have never felt so relieved in my life!
So to all of you out there who are afraid to tell your doctor or tell anyone else for that matter, once you do it, you will feel so good. It's a "buzz" 100 times better than one from alcohol.:new:

Helpahol, Thanks for the post. I had the same inital trouble telling my doctor. Once I did I was so relieved. I found it also opened me up to ask for more help from others which is so important in this battle. Congrats to you.

                    Thanks for posting that.

I posted something a while back about the value of talking to a doctor. I didn't have as warm as experience as you did but it really helped me a lot in making healthy changes. (I talked to someone trained in holistic and conventional medicine.)

I think if you have a good doctor it can be a great experience. I guess you have to go with your gut about whether they can be trusted and how they will react.

hmmm. I'd really like to talk to my doc but can't get an appointment without paying bills. With my family and thousands of dollars in doctor bills, although I pay for medicare (A, B, D for husband) and "premium health care" I still owe loads of money - can't go to the doc unless I pay my doctor bills. Husband is disabled. Son, in physical therapy for shoulder injury, daughter in therapy for suicide, etc... - let out of Childrens Hospital Seattle so called "lock down" facility - out the back door. How do I take care of me??? Father in chemo and my paying for his food and taking him to run errands while trying to keep my job. Just trying to make it through each day is a win for me. If you can get to your doc and talk it out - do it! Good luck to you and keep talking to people.

I've been avoiding the truth with my GP forever, I know I shouldn't but it's that last step of honesty. Maybe part of me says its another person I'd have to let down when I'd see him and he'd ask, "So, how's the drinking problem...?" I appreciate your resolve and can understand what an accomplishment that was. Congrats!

Thanks for sharing your story help. i'm going to the doctor's next week so this gives me some courage to tell her. My only concern is the insurance issue but i'm just going to have to put that aside.
