I just wanted to say thank you very much - I have been lurking, have read the book, and have read everything else I can in order to help my boyfriend get off of booze every day. We have not had a thing to drink for 8 days now.
If you are new, please try to power through it. Between the two of us we were doing 12 or more shots of whiskey a night (often more). I was not as affected as my boyfriend - I tend to stop when I start feeling too messed up, while he just keeps on going. He asked for help, which is why I read the book and bought him all the vitamins and hypnosis CDs. The first 3 or 4 days were incredibly hard for him. But now that he is over the worst part, my god he is like a new man.
The guy who a few weeks ago could not get out of bed before 1 p.m. (and then only assisted by a wake-up shot) roused me out of bed at 6 a.m. this Sunday to take a walk. After more than a year of literally NO exercise, he just called me to inform me that he took my dog on a mile run. The bags from his eyes have already disappeared, and he looks 10 years younger. Even his speaking voice on the phone sounds more bright and alive.
This is only the beginning, but already I am astounded and very very pleased by the change in my boyfriend's body and attitude, and in our lifestyle. Thank you all - you unknowingly helped us both. If I had only known it would take such a relatively short amount of time to get my best friend back from the brink of desperation I would have encouraged him to take steps sooner. However, I do think that he needed to get to a point where he asked for help on his own.
I think we will eventually start trying to moderate, but for now being straight up sober feels wonderful.
