    Positive thoughts: Forgiveness

Good point, Evie - Change your name, Ding!!

I've noticed a few people on here that should change their names... I know it's just a "handle", but it can't be good to think of oneself in such a negative way!

    OK - here's some:

    NewMe
    HopeFloats (lol)
    PeaceNow

Ohhh, so many positive things you could come up with!!

(My name is a combination of first name & middle that I often use... Doesn't mean anything!)

      Dingbat,

You are so right...forgiveness of yourself (and others) is so important in recovery and so is self-talk. I agree with evielou and savon19that calling yourself "Dingbat" doesn't help you to encourage good, positive thoughts.

Whether you believe in God or not, the message of the Bible is forgiveness. There are numerous scriptures that are so comforting. Here are a few if you're interested:

Even when you are chased by those who seek your life, you are safe in the care of the Lord your God, secure in His treasure pouch. 1 Samuel 25:29

The Lord your God is with you, He is mighty to save. He will take great delight in you, He will quiet you with His love, He will rejoice over you with singing. Zephaniah 3:17

I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh. Ezekiel 36:26.

An honest answer is like a warm hug. Proverbs 24:26.

Each of us is an original. Galatians 5:26

I will never again remember their sins and lawless deeds. Hebrews 10:17.

You are special and have just had things happen in your life that brought you to where you are now. We all have a choice and that is so freeing. Keep posting on these boards and let us know how you're doing. There are so many wonderful, supportive people here for you anytime you need to talk.

Really, guys, the name is just a joke! The only thing I have complete confidence in is that I'm not a dingbat! I'm actually quite smart - I even have credentials man:H. My problem has always been taking this good intellect and using it to focus on myself in a positive way. I also didn't want to take a name that was solely related to my problems with alcohol. While staying off of the booze is paramount, I know that getting and staying sober is only the beginning.

One quote from the Kristen Neff site struck me:

You may try to change in ways that allow you to be more healthy and happy, but this is done because you care about yourself, not because you are worthless or unacceptable as you are.

Caring for myself is a virtue that I do not possess. In the past I have tried to make changes based on exactly that fundamental notion: ?I?m a loser, so I really need to change?. That hasn?t worked out so well:H. I can stop the drinking, but then am still left with the feelings, and until I deal with those I will always be in danger of falling right back down into the morass of drunken hopelessness. So, I have a bit of work to do on myself; and the first step, I believe, is going to be giving myself permission to put myself first for a while.

I know this was a long post just to explain an id, but I thought I would try to clarify .

Anywhoo, a thought for the day (I thought I?d keep with the theme of this post):

        Buddha

          Forgiveness

"I am concentrating on forgiving myself first. Because until I can forgive myself I will never be released from the endless cycle of guilt, remorse and self punishment that is keeping me mired in inertia and crippling anxiety. So, I've been looking for some positive reinforcement through sayings and quotes that I can repeat to myself, hopefully replacing the negative ones that have ruled my thought processes for years."

WOW...I could have written that myself, you nailed it Dingbat....

Thank you for such a wonderful post, let's help each other be easier on ourselves.

          Peace
