    Greetings from a new member

    Hi there.

I have been cruising this site for a couple of days now and though I'd introduce myself.

It's day 2 for me as I started taking Antabuse for the first time yesterday and am ready to kick the bad habit for good (hopefully).

I went to my doc 2 days ago and the doc wasn't sure this was the right time (festive season) and asked me to consider starting on 3rd of Jan. Well I went home and thought yes, he's right and got drunk. I woke up yesterday morning and said no more and took my first antabuse pill.

I feel a bit uncomfortable going to meetings etc. so I am quite glad to have found this community and have been reading the posts with much interest.

I am looking forward to going down this road with you all.

    Johnny

The journey is the goal. As long as you're fighting the good fight and you're not giving up on giving up, you're winning. It's not about how often you get knocked down, it's about how often you get up again. Sobriety the goal for sure. But striving to get to that goal is what it's about. Not getting there. Because the journey never ends. The journey is the goal.

      Hi Johny and Welcome,

Look forward to hearing more, great job on starting antabuse. I'm on it too. Takes away the option and is great to not have a choice.

      Good luck to you

        Hi Johnny,

        Welcome!
Antabuse helped my husband get sober, and he now has 10mos.
There is so much available to us on this site.
        Just jump on in.

Thank you very much for the warm welcome.

I like the Antabuse (well.... considering it's the 2nd day.) At least my battle at night is no longer: I am sure I can have one drink. It's not so bad after all I'll quit some other time .... to: I can't drink, I got to deal with it.

It makes it easier. (Though the craving for a drink last night was horrible. I bought myself a bottle of soda and a magazine and tried to forget the world around me)

          I'm glad I'm doing this!!

Johnny - don't know you well enough to determine whether you are joking or not.
Did you say you intend to drink on antabuse?

No. Sorry for the misunderstanding. I wasn't drinking last night. I had some lemonade and read my magazine and tried to distract myself from thinking about drinking.

I've been to scared to use my deodorant this morning (which contains alcohol). So drinking is definately not on my list anymore.

lol! Well that's good to hear.
                Lemonade can be lovely.
I find many need to have mass amounts of subsitutes around for those moments when they would be drinking alcohol; what can they have instead that will be new, refreshing, or even overwhelming just to distract them from a craving.

Yes absolutely. In South Africa we have got a lemonade called ginger beer (I believe it is similar to root beer?) completely non alcoholic. No idea why it is actuall called ginger "BEER".

In anycase, It contains ginger (or more likely an artifical flavorant). and it gives you that tingling sensation at the back of your throat tha makes it just a little more interesting than drinking normal lemonade. It helps me I must say.

Just for the record, Johnny....some years ago I was on antabuse and was called out to help a very sick active alcoholic who was suicidal. Anyway - she had been so full of wine for such a long time, that my proximity to her (she was sweating toxins) made me quite nauseous, so I would DREAD to think what drinking on antabuse would be like! Well done re the magazine and fizzy drink. I ALWAYS find 'light' reading an ideal way to occupy my fragile early recovery mind. You doing fantastic, friend!

                        Thank you Kaponium.

I tried reading a book yesterday to distract myself first. Than I told my wife, sorry. I need something with pictures. I just cannot concentrate on this book now. Went out and bought the mag. Much easier.

Next minute it was bed time and I had made it.

Let's hope tonight will go as well. (Friday of all days)

I won't drink. I know it. In actual fact I know I cannot because of the Antabuse. But however the emotional strain of fighting the cravings. it is tiring. BUT I know. we are all in the same boat. (my wife says I just like complaining )

I too drank gallons of ginger beer initially but I had to find a replacement unless I wanted my teeth to fall out lol so now its iced green tea for me.
