    Advice please

I've been drinking for almost 30 years. I've got a great job with 27 years of service. To my knowledge my drinking hasn't affected my job. Married my high school sweetheart our senior year and we are still married. Raised 4 children and put them all thru college. Even coached their soccer teams for about 15 years. I'm an avid runner for the last 20 years and enjoy skiing, flyfishing, biking, and most outdoor activities.

I got so much to live for but I can't get the drinking demon out of my head.

I started 2008 not drinking on my own. Lasted 43 days, then a drink, 9 more days, then a drink, 7 more days, then a drink. Then in March it was weekend drinking only, then by April it was almost daily drinking again.

What does it take to quit ??? It seems like a simple decision, drink or no drink, but it seems the drink usually gets the decision with me eventually.

MWO seems like a good alternative to AA.

Any advice on how to proceed would be appreciated. I'm tired of living the lie.

Hi Willie, glad you are here. This place is really safe and you will find a lot of helpful and caring people. Most everyone will say to start with a plan, and you can find a toolbox full of plans in the Monthly Abstinence thread under the Goals section. Also download the My Way Out book if you haven't already and read it. It contains a lot of wonderful advice.

Read and post, read and post. You are among friends who have the same problems and fears and hopes as you. Welcome.

Willie- The boards a quiet today. I think I'm the only one here.

My advice is to read through the post, to start...there is a lot of good reading that will help you. I

You should think about whether or not you want to start taking supplemnts to help with cravings. Kudzu is one that works well but, in my experience it's not enough by itself. Read the book "My Way Out". It's the best way to get familiar with what is talked about here.

This is a great place to be. There are lots of people and everyone cares and is going thru all the same things.

      Good luck talk soon.

I found the Topamax to be a great deal of help to me. I took the My Way Out book to my Doctor's appt. with me and explained the program to him. My doc only knew about AA, so don't let that discourage you if that's all your doc knows too. My experience with the medical profession is that if you go in confident knowing what you want, and there are not contraindications to taking the meds, there is no reason for the doc not to prescribe. We are the consumers, after all.

Lots of good information on this in the Topamax thread. The Topamax really does kick those cravings in the butt and it really helped me get through that first 30 days.

          Welcome, Willie! :welcome:

Jamms is right, the forum is very quiet today, it'll be busier tomorrow, I'm sure. You are among friends here. We are a warm, loving and non-judgmental community and you've already been given some great advice. I, too, strongly recommend reading the My Way Out book. It's downloadable off this site. I take the supplements and follow the program which is recommended in the book. I also get a lot of support and help from reading the posts on the site.

It's very helpful to read what others have posted. I'm sure you'll find similar stories to yours here. While we are all individual, our drinking patterns sure are similar in so many cases.

You've done a great job by introducing yourself and reaching out for help!

          Take care, :l
