rough first day
I'm so glad I came across this website. It's like a God send. I'll get right to the point. I am detoxing after a six month binge of drinking a pint and sometimes more of vodka a day. I'm trying to do it with beer. I've had three so far today. I't's 2pm here, and I usually have had at least a half a pint by now, so I guess I'm doing OK. Trouble is I can't stop worrying and am on the verge of going to the liquor store ( I can walk there). I have had seizures before when I stopped cold turkey, so that's always in the back of my mind. I wish I could seek medical treatment but I don't have that option. I've been trying to keep myself busy but feel like I'm going to lose it. Being on the internet talking to others in the same boat I hope will help me get through this. I just need somebody to guide me through this. :new: Any advice would be appreciated. :thanks: Mary AnnStarting over again

Hello Mary Ann and welcome, As stated this site is not a replacement for medical advice. Drink lots of water and stay with us for now. I would certainly recommend you have someone with you in case you do have any problems. Don't do this alone.

Hi Mary Ann,
Yes, this is a God send. There are so many experienced and nonexperienced people here who can help you and will. Do you have anyone at all that you can talk to at home? Can you call a doctor, see a new one who might be able to help you with this? There are probably doctors on here, but I'm not really sure. Stay close to the site and drink lots of water.Sometimes what you're most afraid of doing is the very thing that will set you free.

Mary Ann,
:welcome:
Yes, if you have had seizures before, you are more likely to have one again without detox meds.
If there is ANYWAY you can get to a doctor and get Librium or Valium or Ativan for a week or so, do it. Please.
If you can't, though, absolutely, then you must cut down. It is so darned hard to do it that way, though. I never could. I just kept drinking once I started.
If you have a friend or spouse who can help you, that would be great. They could mete out your portions and you would be safe from just chugging.
BTW, I drank 2 bottles of wine a day and often drank 2 pints of Vodka a day. So I understand the fear of detoxing alone and how to get clean.
But, you CAN do it. Just make a plan. Write it out. Make a schedule of what to drink and when. It is doable. If it is written down, you can read it and stay focused.
Again, though, medical help is the best way to go. No doubt, even with cutting down. It is always much safer. Remember, seizures are not the only thing that can happen. Blood pressure is another thing. You can have a heart attack or stroke. So this path is not to be taken lightly.
Google on cutting down. I believe in the past I found some guidelines for it. It is used frequently in the UK for some reason.
Good luck. Stay close and PLEASE keep us informed of how you are doing. Otherwise we will worry.

Hi Mary Ann, welcome. Good luck to you with you detox, there are loads of things on this site to keep you busy, I started 9 days ago and first thing I did was download the book and read it, then I ordered the supplements and CD (Starter Pack). Nice to start being proactive and gave me something to do.
If you find it really tough, and with your history, do you not think it may be a good idea to see your Doc or another one - you may even find Topamax really helpful to get you through and make it a bit easier for you.
Loads of luck to you anyway.

Thanks 4 all ur replies. It's now almost 7PM. Have had six beers. Been wandering around the house aimlessly and smoking too much. I don't want to drink anymore tonight. I had a good dinner which is something that hasn't been happening much lately. Some days I couln't even eat until I consumed some vodka. I got into chat but haven't figured out how to post yet. As far as someone to talk to not really. I live with my sister, brother in law and nephew. They're too busy with their own lives and I don't want to bother them. I already have enough. I've tried getting librium from my doctor in the past and he said no. I can sense that he can't stand alcoholics. To tell you the truth I think everyone has pretty much given up on me. I can't blame them. I've been drinking a long time. A 9 month rehab 2 years ago didn't help and have been in the ER numerous times. This time I'm really scared because I can feel my health failing. Let me figure out this chat room. Thanks again. Mary AnnStarting over again

Maryann, just because your doctor's probably an asshole, don't give up on getting help. I've switched my doctors a few times until I found someone I was comfortable with. If you can, start calling around today to talk with someone that can help you. They're out there Mary ann. Don't give up!Sometimes what you're most afraid of doing is the very thing that will set you free.

get a new doctor!
Call AA and get a list of AL friendly doctors. Call the local health department. Is there a priest or minister you can talk to? You can't go through this alone--we are here emotionally and spiritually for you, but it seems you need someone THERE for you.

Mary Ann,
Hope you are well today. I know this is a struggle and I also know that you can get through this. As far as a doctor, it may help to find an addiction specialist. That is what I did and he has helped quite a bit. Let us know how you are doing. Gabby.Don't be afraid that your life will end, be afraid that it will never begin.
