Right, purse in car! I used to go walk or go to the gym everyday, but when your doing alcohol you would just gets so small, no friends, no family, no you really, just al. How odd that something that is not even alive can take over your brain! I would love to try antabuse but I have always wonder if I could kissy hubby if I did, he drinks daily. Would the al on his breath n lips cause a reaction?

ODAT-It has not affected me. My hubs is a drinker and a smoker.

I've also heard that you should not eat anything with vinegar, ketchup, soy sauce, BBQ sauce, etc. Because of this, I almost talked myself out of taking it. Thank God that did not happen. I was prescribed 500mg per day to start. The pills come in 250mg per capsule. So, I thought, I'll just take one capsule a day but then I even cut that in half. I am only taking 125mg per day and have not had any adverse affects to anything I have eaten. My main concern was salad dressing as I eat at least 1 salad per day and the dressings all contain some form of vinegar. According to the reviews and blogs I've read, even 125mg per day is enough to make you violently ill if you drink so in my mind, I'm good. I can still eat but there is not way in he!! that I'm going to risk the drinking. And for me, like you sound, it wasn't so much the physical addiction as it is the mind and the habit. So, I'm just hoping that this is giving me the time and the break I need to establish new habits.

Also, at 500mg per day, I was only give 60 pills, so that was a one month supply. I don't know where you are or what kind of insurance you have but shockingly to me, with no insurance, it cost me $206.00! So, at taking only 125mg per day, I've got a 4 month supply which is costing me $50 per month. that was one week worth of drinking.

Also, I can use lotion, all my soaps and facial products etc. I have used the eye glass cleaning wipes. I HAVE NOT USED the hand sterilizer or wipes. I clean vacation homes and offices as a side job so I have products that contain a lot of alcohol, but with the rubber gloves on, nothing. I'm good.

If you have the means, I would definately recommend checking out AB. It has been the life line for me, really. I tried over the last year to quit/moderate and it wasn't happening. I wasn't the drunk on the street yet but if this hadn't worked out for me, I could very well have been going down that road.

Good luck to you. Let me know how it goes.

I have only great things to say about it. Just make sure you are serious because you can end up in ER or worse, DEAD, if you drink on it. There are no options. It is not for someone who is not quite sure about their intention. Even if you think you might want to drink, it can stay in your system for 7-14 days AFTER you take your last pill.

Check out the med thread, there was an antabuse thread a long time ago that is not being used currently but read the posts and about those that did try drinking on it.

If you are serious, I congratulate you. Welcome aboard the AB wagon. It has truly save my life.

          Let me know.

I worked from home then went to the dentist..seems the bad tooth already had a root canal way back when so I need to see a specialist to decide if I want him to "root" around some more or just pull the darn thing....why does the budget always take a hit just when we are a little ahead....aaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhh

                Dottie,
I had my first & only root canal done a few years ago.......never again. I say pull the damn thing & be done with it friend

ODAT, reading your posts got me to wondering - are you using the MWO Hypno CDs?
They are designed to help you change your thinking about AL thereby reducing cravings & urges - they worked great for me!
Taking Antabuse is not going to stop you thinking about AL - you still need to find a way to do that.

I ran across this page tonight:

Byrdie....I'm sorry to hear of your Dad's passing today. How nice it was that you and your family were with him. Quite a thing about the shaving....I'm sure he felt dignified with a fresh shave.....it's amazing what faculties are still functioning right up until the end. Peace be with you!
Dottie....I hope you feel better tomorrow
Lavande......great link....good to read things like that. It makes me more aware of how prepared and on guard I will have to be for various situations. Unfortunately my biggest trigger is dinner preparation time....and there is no way to avoid that! But I'm substituting cranberry juice and soda in my favorite glass. I would also drink until I went to bed......so I came upstairs and got ready for bed at 8:00!! And having a cup of herbal tea. Whatever works, right?

Thank you Byrdie for sharing about your dad's passing. I'm glad he went peacefully and I'm sure it gave him great comfort, to go shaved. It's wonderful you were able to be there, sober, for him. The hospice nurses told me, when my mother died, that hearing is the last sense to go.

You are right, that you never know when life will hit you with something unexpected or difficult to deal with. The call that my mother was taken to the hospital, finally dying from emphysema, came unexpectedly. This was not during a 'quit'. I managed to make the 5 hour drive from L.A. to Las Vegas, sober. She rallied for a short time, just after I arrived. She wasn't able to speak.

Even though I hadn't had a drink all day, I know that she must have been very distressed to see the bloated mess I had become. How I wish it had happened during my two years of sobriety.

I was also terrified that when they removed the breathing tube, in preparation for transferring her to the hospice, that we would have to sit there and watch her suffocate. I still remember the dread......

She never woke up again. She didn't struggle when the breathing tube was removed, but the stress of the trip to the hospice was too much for her. She died within 20 minutes of arriving there. I went back to the hotel and downed 4 double vodkas. Truly a low day......

How I wish I could have given her comfort, instead of distress, at the end. You were able to be, as Kuya said, 'sober and present, to honour him'. Wish I could have been.

My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. Hugs!

Byrdie, my thoughts for peace go with you tonight. It was amazing for you to be there, and in such a strong place in life. Think of the peace it gave him to know how well his daughter is doing. :l Cat

Brydie...all I can say is you are sharing the experience of loss and pain which we all must go through in life. It brings us ultimately to compassion to others suffering. The best thing I can do for you is to offer understanding in your loss and if I were within distance a strong hug to let you know you are not alone in that pain.
