Click on user CP on the blue bar
Then edit avatar and a selection of pics will appear for you to use.
The smilies are on the righ hand side when you type a message - just click on the one you want

Oh, and on the pre - defined avatar bit - click the down arrow and it will bring 300 ish pics - not just Kanga~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~
