Need help, and I feel I at the right place...

    Hey all!
I have been reading about all of you for a week at least.....you all know, I am scared, never drank any until my forties, when a late blooming career took off, and the stress of raising teens and job....well, I am almost 60 now, and I hate this disease....I want the monkey off my back....I need help in the way of meds for the cravings...I don't know where to turn....I will vow to be AF and can do that for a couple of days, then the cravings are so strong, I will almost run over someone to get to the grocery store..............I won't even be out of anything, but I will say I am, just to get wine.....what can you recommend....I have a strong determination, and I do want this to end, I need your help and support......
    Thank you so much......:new:

    Hello Belle!

Sorry, but I had to chuckle at the thought of you plowing over innocent bystanders to get to the liquor store. Not unlike many of us, really And yes, I remember the imaginary recipes that called for something I didn't have... like .... well... wine.

Welcome and congrats on taking action. I haven't got much advice to offer in terms of medication as I'm not taking any - but I'm sure you will hear from the peeps here that do.

SB, good for you, for stepping up and asking for help! Have you read the MWO book? How about setting up a plan for yourself to do the whole program, as described in the book? In addition to what's in the book, there are a lot of very helpful ideas about dealing with cravings, urges, thoughts about drinking, etc.., in the "tool box" thread.

          Welcome southernbelle!

Wine's my downfall, too. I agree with Work in Progress, read the My Way Out book if you can. It's downloadable from this web site. I use supplements and strongly recommend them but I'm also following the My Way Out program. The best supplements for me for cravings are l-glutamine and kudzu, both sold here. I find high-quality supps really make a differnce.

It's about changing bad habits, too. We have so many of them, don't we?

Take care, please keep reading and posting.

Hello all, I hope you are all well and happy. I need a bit of advive if you don't mind. I got some antabuse off my doc a couple of weeks ago and have put off taking it due to still having the odd glass or two. But it's driving me crazy that I'm still giving in to it! I almost took one of the tablets this morning, but was afraid that it it might have an adverse affect on me with having alcohol in my bloodstream from the night before! Once I 'pop one of these pills' I know that I WILL NOT DRINK! Will it be ok for me to take one in the morning? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks in advance and good look to each and every one of you. Sue x

                (((Three Fs)))

I've never taken antabuse, but I would not take it within at LEAST two days from last drinking. I'd look it up on the internet or call the doc who gave it to you. I'd hate to have you take one and get so sick you never vow to take it again even under the right circumstances.

Me I take Campral, it doesn't make you sick if you drink but it does (for me) lessen the desire. Whatever you do, welcome and I gotta ask what are the 3 fs?

you are in the right place. congratulations on taking the first step. we are here for you. the most important thing is determination because this disease is not an easy one to cure. the mind plays tricks on us and tries to convince us that we need that wine. stay strong. something some said today really hit home for me: we have to decide if we really want to stop drinking (in my case binge drinking) and then make the commitment to stop.

Hope to hear from you and how you're doing.

:welcome: Get the Kudzu from this site. L-glutaime will also help with cravings. It is cheaper in bukl. Try mixing a teaspoon in whatever you like. This may be all you need.

I so identify with you....in more ways than one!

The book is the first thing...it gives hope that we can do this...
I love the cd's sold here also.
I don't do the meds but I exercise, drink lots of water and eat healthy whole foods.
Shop the produce section of the grocery store then leave.....quickly! Whole Foods is a great place to shop but stay away from the wine section.....it is huge!
I like to fill my jetted tub and add about 1/2 bag of Epson salts and soak for about an hour
Hang out here as much as you can....there are some very supportive people here....

I agree with my new found friend, Lilmia, this place is a wealth of information, inspiration and folks just like yourself.

Grocery trips for wine.....I can relate. My poison is rum. It's not sold in our grocery stores, but I would plan a trip to the grocery store so that I could run by the liquor store. Even though my husband knew I was a drinking fool, I would bring in my rum along with my grocery items and make lots of noise as to hide getting the rum out of the paper bag and "hiding" it under the kitchen sink. LOL I was so stupid to think he didn't notice.

I haven't taken any of the supplements here or read the book or heard the CD's and I'm AF for 25 days....this time.

I am like you in my drinking. I didn't start until I was around 30. Why I started was so stupid. I was dating a guy who I eventually married and divorced who loved to drink. He introduced me to rum and diet coke. The bartenter at the bar knew us and knew I wanted my drink in a big glass as to lessen the effect....since I was new to drinking. I have stopped drinking for years to have one and then hundreds of days of binge drinking. Now my drinks are about 50/50 rum to diet coke. Gotta get that buzz on really fast......

I have been AF for years off and on. The excuse to ruin my last go at it was that my Dog died. I didn't drink when my Daddy died, but when my little dog died I lost it. That was last April and I finally got ahold of myself Jan 28th of this year. If I make it past 4 months AF I'll be doing great..... I wish you the best!!!!
