    Aussie

Hi, just found this great book about a week ago. Had decided to stop drinking about 10 days before that. Successful but struggling and then read this book. Sounds promising. Wondering if there are any ways to find health products in Australia? I have justed started Campral but have not had much success in the past. Any comments on Campral? I am itching to start with the supplements as my cravings are at high and willpower is waning. :new:

      Hi Romey and welcome:welcome:

There is a thread you should look at -Topomax, Campral, Naltrexone ect, where people give feedback and ask questions about different medications.
There is also another thread called The Next Day Thread where people from Aus/NZ post as well as others.
I'm not taking any medication atm. I have tried Campral but didn't have alot of success. However I do take a multivitamin, milkthistle and magnesium supps each day.

Well done on 10 day AF:goodjob: Keep reading and posting, you will get alot of good advice and support from people here.

        Welcome Romey

I initially ordered all the supps from here, but latterly just the Kudzu and All-One; got the rest in health food shops.

        Well done 10 days.

Thanks for the welcome and information. I had been sober for 21 days and stuffed up last night due to a stressful situation. Was as sick as a dog today and regretted it straight away. Was very aware that the alcohol didn't make me feel as good as it usually does. Going to put that behind me and start again.

                      Moderation

Hi to all who have posted threads for me.

Do you think there is such a thing as moderation? If so has anyone tried this and if so, what do you call moderation (how many drinks at once).

                      Thanks for your help.

                          Hi Romey,
Yep there is moderation, but often a lot harder to moderate and control your intake than to just plain quit.
The amount is up to you, but maybe use international standard drinks as a guide... so maybe no more than 3 a day.

Hi! You're just a bit behind me. After AA for 1 year, Rehab 5 years later, 5 years of sobriety in a life without much fun or meaning (got a lot of education, however...) I "fizzled out" for 10 years. After a rough year of falling, crashing (literally), bloating and generally hating life, I decided that since I hadn't died that I should begin living. Last Friday, I went to a Doc with experience and empathy in addiction. From reading the info on this website, I decided that an anti-craving drug might help with the transition. Sat. was my day 1 and I had no desire to drink. Couldn't even talk myself into a beer.

I feel a little dizzy for about 1 hour after each of the three doses. Then, I feel pretty normal. Plus, I'm a lot more relaxed at work and less irritated by folks. Campral has been a God send and likely a life-saver for me. I didn't realize how paralyzed I've been for decades....afraid to be at any social event where alcohol would tempt me and turn me into an idiot or worse. It's really nice to be able to drive out of my garage and not have to worry about being picked up for a DUI or worse. I'd been drinking every night at home for years, fearing to go out.

In a few months, at a very careful time e.g. not alone. I will see if I can have 1 glass of wine without unwinding. This is why. Addiction impairs the brain chemicals, thus the addictive process is driven and reinforced. The body--brain and liver in particular will heal-- given time. I suspect that early attempts at "moderation" do not allow adequate time for the brain to regain normal chemical balance. I also suspect that it would be helpful for us to have a daily diary to record progress. Already my diet is much better and I'm able to exercise moderately and consistently. These basics really help. I feel like I've just gotten off a huge high roller-coaster.

You can do it! I suggest that you focus on repairing your health, deciding what you like to do for pleasure without alcohol....and then see how you feel after a few weeks on Campral. :wavin: I'll keep plotting my progress on this web. Take care.

Thanks so much for the info. I am a long term drinker. About 5 years ago, I went into detox and lasted one and a half years not drinking but found life very boring and unsociable. I also find it very hard to go to parties or events and not drink. Deep down I know that it is very unlikely that I can moderate but I do need some hope. Have tried campral and it has not been that successful. Coming from Australia, I'm not sure if Topromax is readily used here for anti-craving purposes but I will ask my GP. They usually just use the drugs that they are familiar with the most likely being Antabuse which is just too scary for me to contemplate.

I'm trying to keep off alcohol for at least 6 weeks but have only successfully lasted 3 weeks. Am trying to string days together but am finding it hard.

Have started all the supplements and can't say they are making me feel less likely to drink. We'll keep trying and who knows.

                              Appreciate the response.

                              :thanks:
