Please help me to leave alcohol

    Hello every one,

I have been drinking 1 pint of beer every day since last 4 years, recently in last 6 months i started consuming 2.5 pints everyday.

Now I also started consuming some hard drinks like vodka very regularly. Now I am sick and tired of being drunk but I am afraid of withdrawal. I just planned out to taper off my habit and prepared a plan, please let me know if it looks good. Is it good to completely leave alcohol after tapering off quickly?

    Date Large(bottle) Small(bottle) Quantity (ml)
    15-Jul 3 0 1500
    16-Jul 2 1 1350
    17-Jul 1 2 1200
    18-Jul 0 3 1050
    19-Jul 1 1 850
    20-Jul 0 2 700
    21-Jul 1 0 500
    22-Jul 0 1 350
    23-Jul 0 0.5 175
    24-Jul 0 0.5 175

I would really appreciate any advice or help.

    :welcome:

Your plan looks good to me but I never tapered. I was unable to, I kept drinking once I would start.

Someone will come along who has and can help you with that.

I do know you will feel incredibly different once you are getting there and at the end, your withdrawals should be minimal at best.

Stick with the plan if you can and keep reading and posting.

btw, the supplementation mentioned in the book is very helpful for healing our poor bodies. You should download the book and give it a read.

It sounds like you are shooting to go AF, not moderate, and that seems to be the path that most end up on anyway. Moderation works for very few.

    Take care and again, welcome.

Thank you very much Cinders for a quick reply, just add so that people can advice me properly, I am 32 years old, no major disease so far. Just wan to be normal as I was few years back.

Also, since I am very new to this, I may be sounding very dumb but what is AF and where is the link for the book you mentioned?

My drinking has created mental as well as social problem for me.

scopiosk, I am new to this also but A/F stands for alcohol free and the book Cinder's mentioned is My Way Out, I would imagine. You can purchase this in the Health Store at the top of the page. You can also buy all the supplements there.

AF is alcohol free. The book and various supplements are available from the health store on this site - it can be downloaded. It is also available from Amazon.
I can't advise about the tapering - but if you give more info about current consumption (ie, ml and strength of alcohol as beer is different than wine, which is different than vodka; or you could report in "units" if you are familiar with those) and what you are planning to use for tapering (beer vs. other), someone who has more experience with this can help.
Do you currently get the shakes or other withdrawal symptoms when you go without? If not, you may be able to taper much more quickly with a good plan.
          Welcome to the site!

Hi there, Scorpio. Nice to meet you. I can't tell exactly how much you're drinking, but if you're afraid of withdrawals tapering is one way to deal with it. You'll still likely get withdrawals as your body detoxes, but for me tapering did seem to take the edge off.

Along with your withdrawal "schedule", be sure to listen to your body. Everyone is different, and withdrawing from regular alcohol use / abuse can be dangerous. Some people opt for (and/or need) meds to do it safely. Your body will talk to you as it's withdrawing - listen to it, and be ready to get help if you think you need it. Hopefully you'll get through it without any problems though. Just thought I'd mention that, as I was uncertain as to just how much you're drinking.

I drank a bottle (750 ml) of hard liquor every day, all day .... and had some scary times withdrawing as I tapered off. I think it depends on the person. Drink lots of water, eat well, and get some exercise even if it's just going for small walks, which is what I did.

            Hope all goes well!

p.s.... I tapered off my addiction back in early June and posted a thread about it after a few days into it. If you'd like to read how it went for me, here's the link:

AF for two years. Slight relapse. Working on it at the moment.

I found that I could not taper my drinking, like Cindi once I start I can't stop. You do have to be careful if you just stop as you can have withdrawals which can range from mild e.g. sweating , shaking, to severe hallucinations, convulsions. It all depends what you consume. If you can manage to taper that is probably the best way. You can also detox using chlorediazepoxide (librium) but this should be under medical supervision. If you are not sure what is the best way for you, ask your doctor, or contact AA, they will advise. One thing for sure is you will feel so much better when you stop drinking.
                Best of luck.

Please help me to leave alcohol

Thank you every one, this is a wonderful site with wonderful and helping people!! I appreciate all the help.

Just to answer few queries, 1 pint I guess is equal to around 475ml.

I started consuming around 1 pint of beer (8% v/v) every night since last 4 years, then in last one year I somehow managed to increase it to 3 pints. Till last 10 months I never consumed hard liquor but then I started consuming 360 ml of vodka everyday and some times beer with that.

Just to give an idea, I consumed on an average 2500 ml (5.5 pints) of beer (8%v/v) everyday.

Now I want to taper it off. Since day before yesterday I started tapering off, yesterday night didn't get to sleep too well, today minor headache.

I guess I will be able to do it, I want not to go AF but just want to drink occasionally and not make it a habit.

Thanks everyone for your support and guidance, please guide me more so that I can quickly go to my normal life.

Please help me to leave alcohol

                    Hi Scorpiosk,

I'm aiming to moderate too. It's been a week and a half and hasn't been too bad.

Just to share - A year or so ago I saw a poster on the bus saying "How much is too much?" It had the regular stuff about how a bottle of beer, a glass of wine, and a shot of liquor all have the same alcohol and so on, but then it had some numbers.

                    0 2 9 14

0 - number of drinks you can have if you're pregnant, on medication, or have various conditions

2 - total number of drinks anyone should have on any one day

9 - maximum total number of drinks per week for women

14 - maximum total number of drinks per week for men.

Then it said "to reduce the chance of dependency, aim to have at least one day a week without alcohol.

I remember reading all this in disbelief. How could I limit myself like that. NINE??? I started counting last summer, and rarely could get it down in the low 20s. A day without a drink??? Impossible - unimaginable. But at least counting drinks helped me face some sort of reality. My big step this time was focussing first on the AF day and now days. But, if you're afraid of withdrawl (thankfully I haven't had any), then may I suggest writing down what you drink on the calendar. Each morning, make a plan for that evening and write that down too. Just a suggestion - there are people here who know much more than I do.

We'll all hang in there - :fingers:

                      Hello Scor-
I use to enjoy drinking at least a pint of bacardi (liquor)when I use to party, I'm not sure of the % but instead of tapering off I tried something a little lighter (I thought) was wine.. Chardonnay 13% alcohol.. I downed a bottle of that a night, still in the hospital thinking I was gonna die, I ended up with Mikes Hard Lemonade and Sparks.. They seem very weak being only 5% al.. but its working for a while.. Hope I've been a little help! STAY COOL!!
