For those of you wanting to stop smoking as well...

I just wanted to share a rather unexpected "side effect" of quitting smoking! It took several starts/stops, etc., but I finally jumped off that cliff last Mon.

I realized that if I want to Seriously stop smoking (which I DO), then I just can't drink!! Way too risky. I know that if I had more than a few (!), I'd be driving to store for ciggies.

Knowing that, and focussing on quitting smoking, has made me hardly Think about drinking!! (I did have 2 -very weak! - vodka/tonics the other night when out... but stopped at that.)

I wanted to let you know this experience, since so many have often counseled "don't try to quit both at same time" ---- and now I'm finding the one actually HELPS the other!

I have to really Protect my quit from smoking...!!

    Morning Savon,

When i quit smoking for 3 years my drinking escalated to a scary level. I do seem to tie the two together, but prefer to get 30 days AF under my belt before quitting again. I guess to each his own.

I do notice that the smokes dont taste so good without the al, but i'm willing to suffer through till i feel stronger in my sobriety. SInce i'm a closet smoker, I smoke less than a 1/2 pack a day when sober...

I am looking forward to September when i start my hopefully LAST quit for smokes.

Great job you are doing, two quits at once requires strength and endurance, but is surely doable.

You're right, Mstall, in that we all have to do what's right for ourselves.

I guess I just wanted to point out that quitting both has seemed to make quitting AL easier (for me).

I also wanted to add that you get a Double dose of "feelin' good self esteem"!!

I didn't plan it this way. I just Really needed to quit smoking (I admit, mainly due to Outrageous prices these day!). And once I got going on that, quitting drinking just seemed to be part of the process.

You're the first person I've heard of who drank More after quitting smoking... I know one thing for sure: when I drink, I Chain-smoked!! YUK. I think that's pretty universal - people who smoke, smoke more when they're drinking...

(Figgers those demons would like to hang out together! )

well initially i didnt drink much at all when i quit, but as the months continued, i think i just replaced AL as my "relaxer" instead of smokes. ugh!

This time i will get it right and cant wait to join you. i know how good quitting smoking feels and how it increases your self esteem ten-fold! (just like being sober)

If I want to stay ciggie free--I CANNOT drink. When I was honest with myself about that, I was successful in quitting. Over 1 year now and almost a year AF!

me too!stopped smoking 6 weeks ago - had stressful week at work, got drunk and smoked on day 26 - realised I can't be smoke free and drink.
I try to have a couple of drinks - that takes all my effort and i then obsess about can i have one more, then if i do have 1 more i end up smoking! If i don't have 1 more drink i'm just thinking about it all night.
so - remove the choice and it's easier - coupled with which I have started regular running again (10k in October - and helps v mood/stress/mild depression) and hope to lose more weight without the booze too.
was stressing so much about needing to stop drinking- easier just to stop - well for now - early days - friend's party sat eve - hanging out v pregnant friend - only other sober person there probably!
