Welcome to Fight Club- September Edition

Hey Puddytat- Thanks for sharing your sister's insight with us. The examples of Wisconsin's crazy drinking culture are plentiful indeed. Every event involves AL. It is extremely common for students and alumni to start drinking bloody mary's and kegs of beer at 7 am before Badger games. The whole city of Madison becomes a sea of red-shirted, plastered fans by 2 pm. Then Sunday for the Packer games.. mayhem. I have an especially hard time dealing with these sporting events and curbing my drinking.. And the season is upon us. Good thing I am too swamped to drink. In the office all day today.. again. Well, I hope you get all your cleaning done and have some time to relax.

Mollyka- Sorry about your HB. When my boyfriend and I fight the first thing I want to do is drown my sorrows. But you and I both would be much better served if we have clear and focused minds. Hang in there!

Maisie- You are funny! I am not sure that anyone REALLY pours it in their cereal, but it is not a pleasant thought!

Welcome to Fight Club- September Edition

        ooh ...one other 'Sconnie story

Years ago I was big into road biking, and participated every year in Madison in the Diabetes Ride (doing either the 30 or the 50 mile route)

One year I was trying so hard to be AF, and succeeding! (back then could cobble together lots of days) ...well:

At the end of biking 50 miles, I found two options for beverages at the finish line:
        1) lots of icy cold beer -- from cold taps to bottled microbrews on ice -- ALL FREE!!
        2) lukewarm, flat soda pop available at one little cart ... also free.
(no water, unless you count the tap water in the bathroom)

UGH! only in Wisconsin -- and something as health-concious as biking for diabetes?
hard to stop and stay stopped here, anyway... I hear ya. not that that is any excuse for me, per se. Just, it's always in your face, and always goading from others if you order something A.F.

glad you're getting some good work-time in Liath; cleaning is going well. Smells like potato salad (doing the windows and glass with vinegar)

Welcome to Fight Club- September Edition

Puddytat: we're the same here.I live in a small farming community where, believe it or not, there are no police - they pop across from the neighbouring town every now & then but the whole community centres around farming & sport as the stress valve. And i reckon where there's sport, there's AL (which I gather all you use that abbreviation for alcohol just to save typing or is it reference to something else? enlighten me!) .I don't play sport but you can hardly go out in this town without AL looming big & bright in front of you.
My husband knows I drink too much but being a real Aussie bloke he thinks that it should not be a problem cutting down or removing completely - but he's the sought of guy during seeding & harvest who works so solidly,he's virtually AF for 4-6 weeks anyway.
So my point I suppose is that it is very very easy to drink around here, most people do it,& I'm sure I wouldn't be the only one with a problem.
Today I am making a statement to my self....NO DRINKING TODAY.
You know what's hardest for me? Thinking ahead.Trying to take too big a step perhaps.Just got to remember ODAT (we phrase it ODAAT in Oz) to get through.
Thanks everyone & look forward to getting to know you all a bit better.

              Hi Liath,
              Yes I will be AF.
Daytime not so hard, night worse.Husband coming home from weekend away so will be trying very hard to stay strong.
It's funny reading "AL" as it's like it's a person whom nobody likes - I'd hate to be called "AL" on this site!!
Anyways,I will check in again later when my witching hour comes around & get some backbone.

Welcome to Fight Club- September Edition

                hi again Beagle-

You are right, it is funny! "the demon AL". Maybe that is a bit dramatic. I don't believe that AL is inherently evil or anything like that. I just think that it is bad for some people (most of us on this site I assume). Somehow, we got ourselves hooked and now we are in trouble. I do sometimes think of AL like a bad boyfriend that I know I should breakup with, but I am too entrenched to get away... been there and I DID get away. Now its time to kick AL to the curb! (that bastard, he he)

                  hey Liath,
along that line of thinking we've all been having affairs with "AL" for quite a while - sort of like a casanova to have that many partners - the promiscuity of it all!!! hahaha:H
i never thought I'd be unfaithful to my husband!!
Actaully if I envisage "AL" as a lecherous old bastard that drools, salivates & farts uncontrollably maybe that'll help keep me away! :H:H

Ha! when you think about it ... does sound like we're personifying "him". you guys are cracking me up with your visualizations.

Today may be Sep 7 on calendar, but Day 1 (again) for me. Know I can make it thru physical withdrawals because I id last month (with baclofen) I just get so DOWN facing myself, and my life -- and knowing deep down I really can't change myself (i.e. temperament, personality) all that much.

But 'ole AL does make it worse these days! Here's to a fighting Monday, all!

Welcome to Fight Club- September Edition

Hey everyone...trying to keep up with the Fight Club thread..seem to lose it from time to time...anyway, jumped on Sept 1st to really put up a fight, and it's working. AF since then. YAY! Feels good! No desire really, which is amazing. I guess it's really a combination of surrendering to a 30 day commitment (I had been avoiding any kind of commitment for a while) and giving the topamax a few weeks to get in my system has helped a lot. I'm at 50mg and will stay there for a while..trying to keep at the lowest possible dosage. Also, I've been sleeping and resting a LOT. I just think that is what I've needed to do to recover from a few months of overdoing it. This week I will up the exercise. Putting up a fight here!
Have a great day today. Labor Day here in the USA..a holiday.
                                Namaste'
