    Hi

Well I have just bought the book. The first step & spoken to my doctor.
I am a stressed out working mum that drinks too much and wants to cut down.
I live in Australia and it is the school holidays at the moment so I am on holiday
with my family for a fortnight starting Friday.
I committ to starting as soon as I return, can someone please tell me do you
drink at all whilst on the program? I have no social engagments planned after
my holiday except for one in late October which I know will involve alcohol,
    how does it work?

        MaxyMoo,

Only you can decide if you can drink or not. We call it modding of AF (alcohol free.)

Why don't you tell us a bit about yourself? How much do you drink, why you want to stop, etc.

I am not sure if waiting for the holidays to end is a good idea or not. It depends on what your goals are.

That is a good next step, IMHO. Sit down and consider what your goals are and make a plan to achieve them.

btw, there are quite a few here from Australia and NZ, perhaps some will pop in to introduce themselves.

I have learned quite a bit about your side of the world from MWO. Aussies, Kiwis, UTES, the words arse and feck, to name a few.

:welcome: to MWO and I hope you get comfortable here and can find your way out.

            Hi Maxymoo,

Welcome, you've found a good place!
Whether your plan is to quit drinking entirely or learning to moderate please feel free to join us on the 'Newbies Nest' thread (here in the Just Getting Started section). There are lots of folks there just starting their journey as well.

            Wishing you the best!

Thanks for my replies. I drink 1 bottle of champagne every night and then go to open the second
bottle (sometimes do and throw half of it down sink). My plan is to be in control not it control me!
Its a bad habit that has crept up. If I cant drink moderately I will abstain. I know I can do this!
btw a ute is a car, typically Australians shorten or make slang words, I think you guys call them
utilitys, usually a 2 seater with a massive back for tradespeople. Made me laugh!

                Maxymoo,
The only utility I have is the utility room where I keep where the washing machine, fridge, tumble driver live.

                  Welcome Maxy,
I appreciate your honesty & committment - thanks. I was a wine drinker - more a binger, 1-1.5bottles 4 times a week at it's worst. Being here & meeting the beautiful souls here, and educating myself on this drinking problem has been a lifesaver for me. I now moderate, usually successfully (sometimes not) I also exercise like a demon and don't smoke anymore (12days woohoo!) One day I may choose to go AF for a while or for good but I'm happy with what I've chosen at this point.
Your 'do'in late October - you may need to set yourself a goal and try to stick to it EG I'll be the designated driver and only have 2 drinks or the like. It'll probably be hard but you'll feel great if you acheive your goal. Don't use it as an excuse to get blind...'coz after that there'll be Christmas do's and New Years do's, and January barbies and...and...and - you know what I mean??
There's a thread in the Monthly Abstinence section called 'Toolbox' - there are a lot of good 'tools' in there to help you get through stuff without drinking - you may find something helpful in there.
                  Best of luck, mate.

                  xo

PS Cinders, you crack me up!! (another Aussieism for you!)

                    Hi Maxy
I have'nt read the whole thread but it might be a good idea if you went 30 days A/F then see how you feel after that about doing more A/F days or start modding. I went 30 days A/F then thought I would be ok to mod, but my drinking soon crept up to what it use to be, then I done 40 days A/F and I seem to have control on my mod. drinking although sometimes I have more than I wanted to but I have cut down heeps.
Where abouts in Australia are you? if you dont mind me asking.
                    Good luck
                    Ronnie

Thanks Angelcakes. I will get my holiday to Noosa happening and try to monitor the alcohol.
But give it a good crack when I return. My do in October is to raise money for cancer, its
called a girls night in so good idea re driver but we are all staying the night, I will look up
the toolbox abstinence section to set some goals for that night. Thanks again, I appreciate your
reply and honesty too! Cheers! (with a mineral water!)

Modding is where you are in control of your drinking, you make a plan re if you idealy only want to drink 2 glasses whilst out then stick to those 2 glasses
Or if you only want to drink at weekends then make sure you dont drink during the week, there is a toolbox thread, I think it is in the long term moderation forum, check it out
Some-one here will be able to explain it alot better than I can but all I know is that it is alot harder to mod than to go tottally A/F, you need alot of self control to mod.

                              Morning Maxi,

When I was seeing an alcohol counsellor he suggested I keep a drink diary. You'll be horrified by the end of the week how much you've guzzled down.

Another suggestion was just to start drinking an hour later than you would normally do and also to pour the 1st glass away before finishing the bottle.
