    another newbie sayin' hi

    Hi,

I am 54 and I haven't started the program yet but am checking things out. Here's a little of my history

Mom and Dad serious alcoholics as well as most Aunts, Uncles, cousins, and grandparents. They were the kind that started in the morning and drank 24/7 and straight from the bottle in public. Both parents are deceased. Mom at 54 and Dad at 66.

My only sibling (sister) died at 46 from cirrohsis and was 2 years younger than me.

I don't know if I would be considered a heavy drinker or functioning alcoholic but I decided that I am ready to do something about it. I like wine at night with dinner and afterwards. I drink 2-7 drinks a night. So far, I have no health issues that I know about. I get a physical every year that shows everything to be normal or above. But I don't want to develop issues either.

Looks like there are lots of nice people here.:new:

                    :thanks:

It would be very difficult for me to go outside for any kind of support. I am the only one in my family to experience any kind of success as far as a career, investments and family.

I have been described as a strong personality and an overachiever. I consider myself to be a high achiever. Either one can be stressful.

I have ordered the book, but have not received it yet so haven't put a plan in place.

                    Thanks everyone for the support

                        Hey and welcome.
These medical conditions can creep up on you within that year so yes, it's a good idea to stay away from drink. Just think of what it has done to your families qauilty of life and what they missed? Do you have a family? If so, you need to do it for them as well as you as you know first hand what it's like to live in a family with drinking problems.
Good luck! Stay with us, let us know what your plan is and how you plan to change your daily routine. It's very hard but you can become sober!

I joined today. I want to be AF. Too old to act like a teenager, partying all weekend. Since I dont drink and drive, I am at home on the weekends. I will kick this weekend drinking.
                          I don't want to drink anymore....So, quit.

                            Newbie 2 ...

                            Hi All,

Linedancer's the name! I too am new to this.
I would like to stop the drinking in the evenings also. Lately I've started to buy little bottls of wine instead of a full one, only buying three!! fooling my self to think that I can have just one. It's habit forming. I don't wake up thinking of drink, don't feel crap in the mornings or wake with a hangover. I do however wake up saying today's the day I won't drink tonight. But however after my child is in bed and I'm pottering 'round the house doing tidying up etc. hey, a pint of water doesn't taste so good. or orange juice etc. I don't drink to get drunk, it just relaxes me but ........ it can't be doing me much good.

I keep thinking that ONE DAY something will happen and all I can think of is my little girl losing her mom, is that bad???? or just guilt??

                            linedancer out til tomorow

                              Welcome!
I think you've made a sensible choice to get involved with this site.
My motivation is similar although not as severe in terms of family background.
We have a family tree on both sides of educated and functioning alcoholics.
I found this troubling as a child, and I questioned myself what I had become as an adult?
This has a lot to do as well, as why I never wanted children.
I didn't trust myself to make the right choices I knew I would have to make if I had a family. Besides, the world is full of children!
Everyone doesn't need to have one!

Good luck, and you are right, this site is full of nice people!
