New here...been lurking for about a week.

I stumbled on to the Book & this website a week ago. I am really pysched.
My husband & I have been aware for sometime that we were tired of having our alcohol consumption controling us rather than the other way around. We were fairly certain we wanted something we could do from the privacy of our own home & also looking to explore the option of moderating.

We started on the supplements Sunday...started the hypnosis today...both have MD appointments this week to see about getting some medical support & a script for the Topamax. (Although I did order some online that should be here anyday now) ...so regardless will be starting meds with or w/o a prescription.

We already go to the rec center 4-5 times a week, so exercise is in place...& we are making a commitment to making better food choices as well.

My husband has occaisionally gone AF for a day or two w/o the shakes or DT's in the past year or two...I haven't attempted AF in recent memory. My drug of choice has been wine & usually finish 1/2 of a 1.5 L bottle most days, Hubby drug of choice is Scotch...& he has been drinking 3-4 1.5 L a week. My question is any opinions when we start on the Topamax & go AF....when to start? I was thinking starting on a Thursday...figuring days 3 & 4 will most likely be the worst & would like that to be over the weekend ...to minimize having to take addt'l sick time...hubbies retired...so not as big a deal for his schedule.

    Thanks for any input.:new:

Hello--you have the record for the longest name here I think!!:H :welcome::welcome:

I really don't have any great advice as to when to start the program. With me it was way more mental than physical. I didn't have any major withdrawal symptoms except headaches and fatigue--but I do have a sauna which helped a great deal with the detox I believe. I tried to quit at a time when I wouldn't have too many social events and before summertime when I drank and smoked the most because I was outside.

I am very envious that your hubby is doing this with you. My husband and I were drinking buddies from day 1 and I quit and he didn't even slow down.....so it is a pretty big issue at times. It sounds like you have a great plan and with your exercise in place already that should be a big help. I hope you stick around here and keep us informed of your progress!

      Hi Rejuve!

I'm new here and haven't done a thing outside of reading people's posts and trying to determine what my plan will be. I have to say that I love the confidence and the determination in your post and I hope and pray that all goes well for you and your husband.

I think it's HUGE that you and your hubs are doing this together. It will be such a blessing to encourage and motivate one another!

I have a doctor's appointment this week to determine if there's any medical support my physician can provide considering my other medications. Plus I have a gym membership. I'm not looking forward to that, but I know I have to do it.

Please continue to post your journey here. I will be looking for updates.

        Hi Annie,

My doctor has always been open to things. Was open to my using to Estroven & wild yam cream when I was going into menopause instead of HRT...things like that. I am a little nervous about my appointment today because I haven't been upfront with her about my drinking. She's known I drink wine in the evening, but I've never let on about the extent. I feel strongly that I want her support though. Hubby & I considered going to a physchiatrist that specializes in substance abuse & may still if our PCP's don't support us....we'll see.

Hubby's appt isn't until Friday, his PCP is more up to speed on his addiction.

I'll let you know what happens.

          Hi LTV,

Yeah my husband is my drinking buddy too...so I am glad we're going thru this together.
I am really hoping we see some weight loss with this as well.

          Will keep you posted.

            Hi Rejuve,

Welcome to MWO, it is a great place!
You sound like you are ready - why not just jump in?
Like LVT, my withdrawal was more mental than physical. I decreased my wine intake over a period of about 2 weeks then just quit. I relied heavily on the Hypnotherapy CDs especially the Clearing & Sleep CDs, they are very effective

Feel free to drop in the 'Newbies Nest' thread for lots of support!
            Wishing you the best!

I don't know how much wine you drink in the evenings Rejuve, but that's the biggest thing I'm fearful of telling my doctor. I will just hate it if I see judgment in her eyes! It will help me on Friday to know that someone I "know" has gone before me and braved a confession to her doctor.

              Good for you.

I have been drinking 3 or 4 8oz glasses of White Zin 7 days a week for quite awhile...years can't tell you exactly how many....but I am happy to report my doctor is being fully supportive. There was NO judgement, she even thanked me for being open with her. I went armed with the Topamax study & we dicussed the 4 pillars of the program as outlined in the book, Supplements, Meds, Diet & exercise & the CD hypnosis program. She has called my script for the Topamax & we'll follow-up as appropriate. Phew! That was a big relief to have her support.

I tried to sign in to the Newbies nest & kept on getting an error...maybe it'll work for me later. As far as jumpin right in I am trying to get all my ducks in a row...the last of which is having the Topamax on board...which I will have tonight.

I have heard & read that days 3 and 4 of AF are probably the hardest. I don't know if that's for people only are daily drinkers like myself...I suspect so...& I don't know of those I've read whehter they had meds & the hypnosis to help...but that was my rationale for starting my AF on a Thursday to position those two days on days when I would be off work. So Hubby & I are planning day 1 AF for day after tomorrow. We started taking supplements Sunday...started with the CD's yesterday are already exercising...planning on starting the Topamax when we get it. Wish us luck ...I plan on checking daily...thanks for the support!

                        Hi LongestName and Welcome!!!! :welcome:

Glad to hear you read the book and are giving the full program a chance. I'm not one for prescription meds but got my start utilizing the other 3 pillars. (does that make me a 3-legged stool? Better than a 2-legged stool I guess!) It's a bumpy road but happy to say I am approaching 1.5 years of continuous sobriety later this month.

Mr. Doggy is not a big drinker at all, but was a rather heavy pot smoker. We were more codependent buddies than party buddies on some level...but still. We quit together and have never regretted that decision. In fact, our relationship today is better than ever now that the substances we abused are out of the picture.

So...just thought I'd share that tidbit in hopes that it gives you and Mr. LongestNameEver some good motivation to stick it out and stick together!

Best wishes - hope to get to know you better.
