Can you quit Before you're committed?

That was the question I asked this morning on a similar site for quitting smoking...

A person replied with this quote, that I wanted to share - since it's really about Any sort of commitment, including drinking:

    Until one is committed
    there is hesitancy
    the chance to draw back,
    always ineffectiveness.

    Concerning all acts of
    initiative there is
    one elementary truth,
    the ignorance of which
    kills countless ideas
    and splendid plans:

    That the moment one
    definitely commits oneself
    then Providence
    moves too.

    All sorts of things occur
to help one that would otherwise
    never have occurred.
    A whole stream of events
    issues from the decision
    raising in one`s favor
all manner of incidents and meetings
    and material assistance
    which no man would have
    believed would have come.

Whatever you think you can do
    or believe you can do;
    begin it.
    Action has magic, grace,
    and power in it.

    Goethe

      Savvy,

I do believe that action has grace & power, absolutely!
It's up to you to take the step, make the commitment, to 'Begin'!!!!

I was scared to death when I commited mysef and 'Began' here. The same with Quitnet. But, I found in each instance, the commitments 'took on a life of their own'! I believe it was because I truly tired of abusing myself with AL & Cigs. I really wanted to meet the adult non-drinking, non-smoking adult 'me' for the first time

      Surprise yourself - I did

        commitment

Thank You for posting this quote as I really needed to hear this today. For me commitment is so important to stay AF. I can get so easily distracted I lose my focus on staying Af.

          Thanks for sharing this Savon!

          Until one is committed
          there is hesitancy
          the chance to draw back,
          always ineffectiveness.
As long as I was "sort of committed" or "pretty darn committed" I was leaving the door ever so slightly ajar for AL. As long as I was not 100% on board with the fact that I simply CANNOT ever drink normally, the door was still open for AL. As long as I harbored a teeny tiny hope that maybe someday I could have just one, the door was ajar for AL.

And you know what? He walked right back into my life. All it took was one drink to start the same old crap again.

So for me, total committment is vital to my sobriety. (for both AL and Nic)

            Much appreciated, savon.

I wholeheartedly agree. Planning itself will get us nowhere with whatever we wish to achieve in life. It takes action to get the ball rolling.

I think one can begin to quit but without commitment, it will not last. Commitment is the key. But, commitment can come after some time of experiencing the benefits of the new behavior. Thanks for this quote from Goethe. I will save this one.

Dont forget, you can: start late, start over, be unsure, try and fail AND STILL SUCCEED!

If it is important to you, you will find a way. If not, you will find an excuse.
