New with lots of questions
Hi, I'm new to this site. Just stumbled onto it yesterday and seems like it fits already. I haven't had time to do a lot of looking around yet but I do have a question. I'm considering taking the topiramate. Does anyone know if you can take it in addition to Campral? :new:Tags: None

beth,
no. topa is for people who want to moderate. campral is for people who want to abstain... but you need more than a pill to help you.. so make sure you have more than just one strategy in your armour to overcome drinking.
i've not heard of anyone taking both together.

Hi Beth
And welcome.
Brigid's right: Topamax and Campral are not prescribed together. However some docs have begun using a combination of Vivitrol (injectable naltrexone) and Campral.
Vivitrol is an opioid blocker which reduces the euphoric effects of alcohol and helps reduce craving. Campral doesn't work on the opiate receptors as such, but is believed to modify the action of GABA in the brain. The two meds are not contraindicated for one another so may be used together.
Dr. Linda Garcia, MD, medical director of our program, says she's having very good early success with Vivitrol, which has recently become available.
Best to you as you get started. :-)
RJ
(And both Brigid and Suz are correct about considering other elements of the program, as they can be very helfpul to you.)----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
