How can I change my negative thinking?

    KatieB;814078 wrote: Hi all,

know to be truly happy will be to stay AF, but be less paranoid about the world and people, and be able to maintain friendships - as being with other people does bring me happiness as long as I am not worrying about what they think of me etc. all the time.. Does anyone have any ideas as to how I can overcome my fear of life and start to enjoy myself more? (without AL)..

Any advice would be gratefully received,

    Thanks, K xx
Good thread Katie. I can relate to being paranoid and fear of rejection. All I can say is that people come in all sizes and shapes and you are not responsible for their OPINIONS. That's all they are. If they take issue with something or someone, it says more about them than you. All we can do is to put ourselves out there and hope for the best and try not to take anything personally.

A book I'd like to recommend is called The Four Agreements. Two of them are to not assume anything and not to take anything personally. It's a great read and might be helpful.

        Thanks Spuddle,
I also tried to get my issues sorted out 5 years ago, and was seeing a psychiatrist and taking anti-depressants.. but as I was still drinking, obviously none of this worked.. and I ended up right back where I started.
I am more determined now! I want to sort my issues out once and for all!
I have a fellow nurse friend who is a registered hypnotist and helps people with anxiety and depression.. though I am still going to see my psychotherapist, I think I will see my friend too for the hypnosis; she said she will also get me to quit smoking! I will give it a try soon..
thanks again everyone for your great advice,
        K xx
