    The way people think!!

Why is it when you tell people your not drinking they ask why???

If you tell people your stopping smoking they are so full of praise for you and say well done!

If you tell people your on a diet and trying to lose weight they encourage you!

Are we really seen as freaks because we have a problem with drink??

    Hi Panno,

I've gotten along just about a year now, very nicely, without telling anyone anything!!
The way I look at it is it's my business not theirs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

that is such an interesting question. i think it's because smoking gets so much publicity about how bad it is for you--so when someone stops--it's time for celebration. when someone stops drinking it could be a couple of things that come to surface. does the person questioning you have a problem perhaps? by you not drinking you may be forcing this person to look at his/her own drinking habits. ?? or.......just because drinking is known to be bad, but maybe not as bad as smoking, the need to quit isn't as well known. i don't know. i like what lav posted........it's none of their business anyway. people close to you will support you without getting into your business.

        love to you!

          Pan,
I ran into this this weekend, my first time saying I dont drink anymore. It was kind of ackward at first but small price to pay for my freedom from the devil. I also agree with Mama, some people do not have a problem therefor they dont understand what we are going through.

Panno, I agree with mamabear. If they don't have a drinking problem they are probably just ignorant. Everyone in this world has the right to walk thier own truth. So keep it up Panno, you are doing great!

I think its because of the social problem that is associated with AL - seeing homeless on the street drinking AL out of the proverbial brown paper bag, the violence AL can cause, the general unacceptability when someone is drunk and cannot "handle" their drink, the drink-driving.. smoking is just bad for your health, it doesn't really cause any social problems..drinking does.. that's why if you have a problem with AL, people think their must be something wrong with you mentally (which there is in alot of cases!) - i'm not saying all people with a drinking problem have issues mentally.. but unfortunately mental illness is still seen as taboo, even now with all the literature and help services like "beyond blue" etc.. i have scared off so many ppl with my issues.. people are afraid still.. there is not enough knowledge and too much ignorance..
                Just my 20 cents,

Drinking is so socially acceptable and i agree also if you have never had a problem with it you wouldn't understand. People that do have a problem with it wont give you enouragement because that is the way they justify there own existence with it - does that make sense?

When i told a person i know that i was not going to drink (46 days ago) he said to me.....'you wont be able to do it' what do you think of that? well i can tell you im a stubborn women and that just made me want it for myself even for.
