Hi there, I'm new and having serious sleep issues

Lot's of good advice from everyone. I think sleeping is an issue for a lot of us. Was a big reason I drank, since my mind would not shut down for me to rest at night. I would try not drinking for a night here and there and of course did not sleep worth a damn.

After getting serious about staying AL free, I drank relaxing tea all evening: chamomile, tension tamer and sleepytyme extra with velarian. I also took velarian tablets or schizandra tablets prior to bed and used the CD's to keep the chatter in my brain quiet.

I continue with the tea in the evening and the schizandra(has velarian in it). Sleep is much better and I only use the CD's on a tough night which are few and far between these days.

    Good luck with your quest.

Hi there, I'm new and having serious sleep issues

Well I'm a bit different in that when I stop drinking I crash, and sleep so well I can hardly bear to get up. However, part of my job (ironically) involves advising people with certain problems (not Al related) how to sleep. Melatonin cherry drink works well for some, but you need to use it for about a month at least. I use Red Seal Relaxing tea, but I don't know if it's available in the States. Other than that, get a bedtime routine just like you do with babies, where you wind down, relax, bathe, maybe read and then sleep. Some sleep specialists don't recommend reading in bed because bed is for sleep, to which I say "Bollocks," with apologies if that's a rude word in the States, because it's part of everyday speech here. Reading certainly helps me sleep. It helps me to walk the dog in the evening. Watch a movie. Do what it takes. Just don't obsess. It will come, and I'm a firm believer that your body will not let you go past a lack of sleep it can bear. I've seen people who I'm sure are being kept awake by their anxiety over not sleeping. Let it go. Just don't get up and clean the house or you will be tired next day. :goodjob:

Hi there, I'm new and having serious sleep issues

Hi Miim, I am glad you are here and trying to rid your life from alchohol, good job. For me what helped with my sleeping was normal vitamin D you can get from any store - whatever the adult normal healthy daily dose is. The other thing I take is one normal fish oils, Omega Oils, pill from any store - one healthy normal adult dose. They are cheap, reallly healthy for anyone, and they help me sleep. Hang in there,

Hi there, I'm new and having serious sleep issues

            Still cannot find Asteril

I will look at GNC and another Walmart again tomorrow. I napped today with my daughter so I am wary that it will again be harder to sleep tonight. We shall see...

Hi there, I'm new and having serious sleep issues

I know how hard it was to sleep at first. I had to get a prescription from my doctor at the beginning. Also, try drinking some milk. Also have you tried taking just some regular benadryl? Sometimes that helps. Hang in there. Eventually, your body does adjust. :l I rarely have to use my prescription med at all anymore.

Hi there, I'm new and having serious sleep issues

You know that Western society is one of the few that expect 8 hours sleep to be the norm. European countries nap after lunch for 2 hours and go to bed really late, even the kids. Some cultures don't even go to bed, ever. They have no notion of special clothes and removing themselves to sleep and they nap where they are. I know that you have to fit into societies expectations, but if napping works for you, go for it. I don't think I got a full 8 hours sleep for years when I had my babies. I actually tell people that if they are lying awake worrying that they might not sleep, to remind themselves that they can always nap in the afternoon if necessary. Your sleep patterns will probably return to normal after a while anyway.
