I took this out of a christian text book meant in a general context of temptation but found this to be an amazing revelation in terms of pattern of temptation when it comes to drinking as well. So if you're christian use this in general context, if you're not take it as interesting information justy about temptation in the drinking context. I found this amazing so didn't want to post this in the what we believe thread which is rarely visited
The Pattern:
1. Temptation starts with a thought within. (the desire is born within you. If the desire is not there you would not have to struggle with the particular temptation. I.e. temptation strucks where you are the weakest).
2. Second step is doubt. (Is it really so wrong? Should I just have one?)
3. Deception. (you can get away with it. No one will notice. It's only one in anycase.)
4. Disobedience. (you act on the desire within).
The book then further stated you should identify the whens, wheres, with whoms, what's, etc. to fully understand where you are the weakest and avoid those wherever possible.
Quite amazing. It could have been written for an alcoholic but wasn't.
I wanted to leave this relatively generic but will also post this in the what we believe section with some more christian insight and further deliberation out of the booki.
I think that if you identify the pattern of how the cravings/temptations work within you, it's important to try and stop the process as early on as possible, i.e. try not to linger on the thought and draw out in every detail how it would feel, taste, etc. but try and distract the mind as soon as the thought arises. Easier said than done.
We are also all unique off course. :-)
The book is Purpose Driven Life by Rick Warren.
