    3500 calories per week

Day 2 AF and I think I am over the worst of it for this day. Calculated that at one bottle of red wine per night, I was absorbing 3500 non essential calories. One pound a week. Have any of you longstanding abstainers (30+ days) noticed much weight loss? The commitment to a supportive group to try for 30 days helped me not drink wine this evening. Thanks.

Hi Free, the weight fell off me when I cut out the booze. I have lost nearly 2 stone without making any effort at all, if anything I eat more now cos I've sugar cravings and stuff that I never had when I was drinking - its a brilliant bonus, was for me anyway - keep up the good work - first few days are the hardest
    Contentedly sober since 27/12/2011

unfortunately i seem to be the odd one out with this. ive put on weight since being AF. i know why. i have been nibbleing snack food and treating myself to keep away from the booze.i couldnt go too mad on chocolate as im diabetic but i made up for it with lots of other unhealthy stuff. i think im over that now so ill start to address the new extra weight. it was worth it to help me be AF. most other people seem to have lost weight though so thats an added bonus
Today is the tomorrow i worried about yesterday and it turned out fine

I know what you mean - I do that "alternate oral gratification" thing too. First I started stuffing in chocolates (most unlike me!!). Having desserts (what???). Joining the children in their bowls of ice cream... Gotta stop this or I'll be a HOUSE.

            Free At Last,

I am not a long-term Abber but the last time I quit drinking it was for a week and I lost 5 lbs. I worked out for between 45 min and an hour every day. The first thing my family noticed after just 3 days AF was the puffiness in my face was decreasing. It is my incentive once again as I have about 60 lbs. to lose.

It is Day 2 AF for me and I am going for 30.

                Hi Free,

As a longstanding abstainer ( coming up to 10th months). Before I went AF i was seriously underweight. Not slim or petite extremely thin and haggard. By dropping the alcohol totally out of my life I have managed to put on 28 much needed pounds. I eat a much healthier balanced diet, and yes there are treats in there like chocolate and ice cream.

Now my eyes and skin are clearer, I'm much happier looking in the mirror.

The calories in booze are definitely empty calories. They do absolutely no good to your weight, your health and also your mental well being.

                    Spuddle,
I'm with you on the eating more to make up for not drinking course.. I find I am hungrier and craving sweet snacks more.. as Coco said - oral gratfication! I see my son doing the same, so in Freudian terms its us being stuck in the 'oral' stage of our growing up! .. I guess exercise is the key.. i do lots of walking everywhere which keeps the weight off for me,

                      Free,

Those sugar cravings are horrible....9,000 mg. of L-Glutamine for me and they really help.

Good luck and we are all here for you!

                        Free,

I'm not a long term Abber but I have certainly cut my intake by a HUGE amount since the end of Jan. Since 25th Jan, I have lost 8 kgs / 17.6 lbs. I am excercising and being more aware of what I eat. However, I am not being restrictive. Last night's dinner was lasagne and garlic bread - nothing low calorie about that.

For me, the whoosh was in the first stretch. First time I stopped drinking was nearly 1lb per day, 9 lbs in the first 12 days. Maybe that was all "water weight" or "salt weight" or something like that.

After that, a long slow slog as my whole metabolism changed. I definitely eat more sweets at night, and I had to learn to mix some real carbs with the artificial ones, because there's no sticking power to the fake sweets.

I'm still paying for Christmas 2009. OTOH I eat more freely now than when I drank. And I'm inching down, 4 lbs to go for swimsuit season in a month. I can get 1lb per week just by being on-program for 18 of the 21 meals per week. I exercise 40 mins five days a week. This helps me mentally as well as physically, and was a real key to my changes.

I'm looking forward to losing a few! Hopefully that will help with the motivation.

Free at last, wine was my drink of choice too....I am on day 10AF and yes, have definitely noticed the alcohol weight coming off as well. I always hiked and worked out a lot but missed a lot too due to hangovers so now without the hangovers as well the extra physical activity really helps too. Keep it up, you'll do great!
