welcome gearhead! I am going to repeat what johnny said, if your withdrawal last time was that severe, please do consult a doctor first. Glad you have joined us, this place is great! Tones of support and information. Read, post and ask.
Pano, I can easily drink a bottle of wine a night! Such a slippery slope it is.
I am at the end of day 15, and I feel fine, no urges. But irritable and hypersensitive. Don't know if it is down to my body detoxing, or the usual stresses, family, work, the economy. Just have to work through it. (wish we could abstain from the recession, are there any supplements for that?)While we may not be able to control all that happens to us, we can control what happens inside us.

Hi all. Still here hanging on. The funny thing is I don't have a problem with cravings. My problem is my mind that is waaaay out in front of me, worrying about how I am going to go through this event or that AF. Jeez. They aren't even here yet! If I could just reside on another planet, I'd do just fine! Congratulations trucker. Well done. Welcome Gearhead. If you have been consuming 12 beers a day for 10 years, you might want to have a little help from a doctor before stopping cold turkey. But you know best what is good for you. Best of luck any which way. Day 6 for me here. prancy

Prancy Another planet? I'll beam you up! I made it through my niece's graduation and the party that followed. That is the first party I've attended AF in more years than I can remember. I actually enjoyed myself. So, hang in the kiddo and grow those days onto day 6....techieOutside of a dog a book is mans best friend. Inside of a dog its too dark to read

Welcome Gearhead!
You've found a great place with wonderful people offering support, encouragement and advice. I used to drink a 12 pack of beer a day also. I ended up going to the doctor to have Ativan prescribed to help me through the first week of withdrawals. I've found that being completely honest with the doctor is the best way to go, they really can help if you are. Again, welcome! Please keep reading and posting, and let us know how you're doing!

The doc gave me Ativan and Prozac, the anxioty attacks were so severe it felt like my heart was going to explode, i couldn't breath, and i would shake so bad i couldn't use a pen. Thank you for the support. I don't think I can go cold turkey........what would be a good way to gradually cut back?? One less every day until i quit?AF & NF Since 11-08-2010

Gear, don't know your situation but I went to a detox center for 5 days. There were medical professionals monitoring me. I had one slight seizure, but made it through on meds and follow treatment. If I had gone CT on my own not sure I would have or who would have handled my seizure. Good luck and I would make a collective decision with your doc. That's a lot of beer over a long period!!!Outside of a dog a book is mans best friend. Inside of a dog its too dark to read

Hey all....I've been busy, busy all weekend but, I'm still climbing. Day 8 for me. Almost got caught by the bears today but got saved by my son buying dinner and having it waiting for me at home before I left work. I had to drive straight home.
Panno - I can drink that much wine easy. You are not alone.
Welcome to everyone else.

LOL Techie. Which planet are we going to? I am on.
Gear, I think when people recommended not going cold turkey, they didn't mean keep drinking. I believe we all meant to have some medical support to avoid the horrible and potentially lethal side effects of suddenly stopping after all those years and all those beers. Someone mentioned seizures...
Nora, I am with you--still climbing. Day 6 here. So I am right behind you and watching your back!
All others, stay strong and AF! Here's to another sober day.

Mornings my fav climbers!!! How's the weather up there in the mountains?AF since 15th March 2010
The journey is the goal. As long as you're fighting the good fight and you're not giving up on giving up, you're winning. It's not about how often you get knocked down, it's about how often you get up again. Sobriety the goal for sure. But striving to get to that goal is what it's about. Not getting there. Because the journey never ends. The journey is the goal.
