Starting out and feeling unusually positive!

    Hallo

I am a mere 20 hours into being sober, feeling sweaty and gross but really excited by the idea of never drinking again. I've said this before but I'm getting better at quitting. I'd like to just walk away from it like Jimmy Greaves did. To be honest, I don't greatly care if I'm perceived as dull, I just want to feel fit and have relationships built on mutual respect.

I am 32 and live in Canada. I spent my twenties in Brighton, Ireland and Poland - not easy places to stay dry! I have drunk heavily for 13 years, I was on 200 units a week toward the end. My grandfather and uncle were chronic alcoholics.

Taking my b-vits and avoiding caffeine. Looking forward to a quiet life.

This is a great place, and you are making a great start. Keep positive. I am 10 days sober and my worries about being perceived as "dull" are fading into insignificance the last day or 2.

I have no chance unfortunately of being able to give up caffeine in the near future

    Good luck with your journey

Hey Tommo...I'm onto my seventh day without booze. It's been easy. I thought it wouldn't be possible but I just did it. No cravings no nothing really. I'm going to do a month and see how I feel. In the meantime I'm not spending $20 a day on grog. I'm pretty pleased about that. At the end of the month I'll be $600 better off...something I never gave a thought to while I was boozing. Before that I hadn't missed a day on the piss for at least 20 years.
I guess it was time. The stars must have been aligned or my guardian angel intervened.
You'll be OK...don't think about it too much. Just do it.

Tommo, you sound so positive, I definitely think mental attitude is at least half the battle. I read practically everything on here and particularly when you read what the 'oldtimers' write you notice the real success stories are mainly very positive vibrant sounding people. Of course we can't be happy all the time but trying to find the 'positives' is a biggie
Good luck oh and hey to Gertrude, Techie, Girly and the 'ever positive' BlueH!!

Welcome Tommo. I've bin drinkin heavily for over 20 yrs now on and off. I'm on day 12 which i havn't gotten to in a long time an feel so much better. I've had cravings some days but not too strong. I'm takin L-glutamine 1000g 3 tmes daily. I'm not sure if this is helping but i'm giving it a try. You can this in any health food shop. I tried to get Kudzo but it doesn't seem to be available here and i hav no credit card so i can't order online. I wish u the best of luck.

Just to add i love my coffee specially Java so i won't be givng that up as i successfully give ciggies 3 yrs ago and it was easier than the booze. So coffee and the occasional chocolate is my treat now.

:welcome: Tommo - your positive attitude will serve you well on this journey!
Take a look in the toolbox https://www.mywayout.org/community/f1...box-27556.html for some great tips. If you have a particular "witching hour" when you would normally start drinking make sure you keep busy at this time or come on here, its good to make a plan for dealing with all the times you are likely to encounter triggers.

Its not always easy but I promise you it sure as hell is worth it! Wishing you much strength, you have found a great place to vent and for getting support. :l

Thanks for all the support. I got a couple of hours sleep last night which surprised me - when I've quit before I've not slept for the first couple of nights.
