How Big Is A Glass Of Wine?
A lady over here got caught over the limit last year. The media covered her story because she was adamant she had only had 1 or 2 glasses of wine with lunch. They were the 250ml glasses that are quite the norm over here sold as 'large'. As such they hold around 3 units and more than 1 will put the average woman over the limit. She was very small framed too.
So what was her reading?56mcg of AL per 100ml breath, our limit is 35mcg. To put this into perspective I drunk-drove only once and up until then I was adamant I would never do it. The results?I crashed into a family in another car, in swerving to minimise impact at last minute I flipped my car onto it's roof. I knew throughout that 30 minute drive I was not fit to drive and my breathalyser reading?56mcg per 100ml breath.
The lady I mentioned was caught by filling station attendants and thought it unfair as she didn't realise how big the glasse(s) were. Well I know AL affects people differently but if I almost killed myself/others and certainly felt the effects at the same level I can only presume she could have been a potential hazard in the same way.
Standard glass 125ml is around 1.3 units
Medium 175ml 1.8 units
Large 250ml 2.5 units based on 10% wine - 3 units for 12%
A woman in the uk can have up to 3 units befor driving, men 5 units. A pint of stella contains 5 units. These are only guidelines and you could still be over the limit. Those 250ml glasses are half a pint!
