How Big Is A Glass Of Wine?

I am not much of a wine drinker. My poisons of choice were beer and whisky.
My wife is a wine drinker. She is also French. To not have wine with dinner 'il est impensable.' My wife's preferred glass is an elegant and quite old piece with a neat bowl and longish stem. It is properly filled by 100mls (about 3 1/3 ounces)
I have noticed recently at various establishments that the glass sizes seem to be getting bigger. One club I visit regularly has 250ml glasses.
What is the accepted size of a wine glass now?

The official "serving" of wine here in the states is 4 oz. The last I knew, anyway. I know my "measures" were a tad larger....

Oh...depending on the sort of wine, the bowls are bigger or smaller. White wine tends to be dispensed in the smaller glasses, while certain red wines need larger globes in order to aerate and "open up". I hope that clarifies things a bit. The serving is the same, but the space it is in is large.

In the UK a small glass of wine is 125 ml
But like you say, in pubs and clubs they are serving them in up to 250 mls

          Hi Blue, Fennel, Startingover
My husabnd is also French and always had a glass of wine with dinner and sometimes while cooking a gratin dauphinoise or something else french and delicious. He could always stop... and it didnt matter if there was half a bottle left or a thimbleful.. it didn't matter. I never could and hoovered up the lot... could it be our different upbringings?? He from France where it is traditional to drink wine at a young age ( always a very small amount, never more) or me from NZ where it is frowned upon to drink untkil 18 yrs old but when you do start drinking, the size of the glasses are like huge buckets and more to come!!!

            Heya mornings.

This used to be my preferred glass. Especially on those occasions when I could only have one or two glasses:

Being half German I also have equivalent size beer glasses

On a more serious note though. What happened to the times when AL had to be served in units so that the bar man could keep an eye out on patrons in respect of how much they're drinking and not driving then?! That used to be a pretty global standard. So if you're telling me wine glasses are getting better, etc. they've basically abundened those principles?

The journey is the goal. As long as you're fighting the good fight and you're not giving up on giving up, you're winning. It's not about how often you get knocked down, it's about how often you get up again. Sobriety the goal for sure. But striving to get to that goal is what it's about. Not getting there. Because the journey never ends. The journey is the goal.

Hiya johnny.. wow just look at that glass!!! That is what they serve in Aussie and NZ but fill them up a quarter so I guess thats a quarter of a bottle. Well done on you AL free time, you are doing so well!!
Here there is no such thing as drinking and driving because its an alcohol free country but I have never seen so much drinking and driving in my whole life... its very scary. The police seem unaware and uninterested. this is the only place in the world I have been when you are doing 100km in an 80 km area, see a police car and they wave you on!!! No speed camera, breathalizers nothing. Not Good

Shew. Well SA can be like that a little bit at times. Not quite with the drinking and driving but cops seem little concerned about speeding. you can be doing 120 in a hundred zone and get a cop car overtaking you doing 130-140. They're the worst speeders.

But hear you on the drinking and driving. that is scary and dangerous.

Not sure you've heard about Nelson Mandela's dauther who died early Friday morning in a car crash. Driver drunk. what else.

Yes I did Johnny and was so sad... the results of drinking are bad but drinking and driving... for me its unforgiveable... trash yourself but don't trash other people... I am/ have been/ won't be for much longer /a drunk but I cannot understand drinking AND driving... I did once 13 years ago and wrapped my car round a pole, no one injured just the car but for me that was when I said NO.. still drank but from that moment on ..never ever got into a car after drinking. Even here I never ever get in the car after drinking even though I know I would never be caught but thats not the point... lives at risk .. too important

Hey Johnny, just remembered about 5 years ago being at a wedding in Capetown and it seemed everyone drank/drove (?), we didn't cos hubs just doesn't, but my BIL who has no problem drink driving even here where it is very strict had mad sessions over there and drove back to the hotels plastered. Anyway one night he was so pissed that he drove into a car park by mistake and kept driving around in circles cos he couldn't get out and a police car came in and when he told them where he was trying to go they escorted him to the hotel and waved goodbye!!

Yeah. A LOT of drinking and driving in South Africa that's for sure. Despite the fact that you get a criminal record, your license suspended, etc. etc.

The cops also tend to turn a blind eye at times. either for a little monetary contribution or just because you're a nice enough oke that doesn't stir trouble.

I hear you Patrice, Yet I also used to drink and drive. Less and less as even though drunk I was still sane enough to contemplate the consequences but yet when you're near passed out there's not a lot of sanity left in you, right!? I guess the answer it one should never drink to that stage. And I guess that's why wer're all problem drinkers that need to do something about it.

I dispise drinking and driving. Yet drinking is a horrible disease that leads you to do things you would never as a sober person.

Such a shame even more when the children suffer. hey hey hey.

                            Blue Heeler,

(Love those dogs, btw, very intelligent animals.)

In the US, I have seen a glass of wine being considered 5 or 6 ounces. 250 mls is ~8 ounces, so your wife is drinking ~4 ounce glass of wine.

If she only drinks one glass of wine a night, she is considered to be well within the safe guidelines for women's alcohol consumption. At least here in the US.
