    Just arrived!

G'day Smile. I came here a month ago. The last two weeks I have been AF. If I can do it you can too. I have been a heavy drinker ever since I was old enough to go to the pub. And I do mean 'heavy'...it was only my ox-like constitution that kept me together.
I never missed a day, couldn't really, it wouldn't have been a day if I didn't have a drink. After I decided to stop, the first thing I did was to try drinking non-alcoholic substitutes. Tried everything including 'alcohol removed' wine. Some of it was dreadful. Finally decided that ginger beer and chinotto were the best.
The main thing that worked for me was that I decided to make it an adventure. I'd never been here before (not drinking) and I wanted to find out what it was like. I wanted to see what changed and how I felt as time went by. It's been very interesting and I've been keeping a record (I'm on day 14 now and at the end of the month I'll review the changes - all for the better so far.)
One thing that still eludes me is how I came to my epiphany. I know it was something I read here but I can't pin it down. Maybe while you are looking through the stories you will recognise it when you see it. If you do find the trigger please let me know. I'm sure it was subconcious for me but it bugs me that I can't find it.
I have the feeling that you will get the same result as me, and quickly. Keep us posted.

      Just arrived!

      You are in good hands

here. I can feel and empathazie with your frustration. Just keep trying.

I think there are a few here that use AA. AA worked for me for awhile, then I relapsed and all my support systems were gone. They dropped me like a ton of bricks And I felt lost and continued to drink.

I did go back to AA recently, but have decided to forgo it for the time being. It drums up too many emotions for me....and sends me to the beer store. Maybe when I get more time under my belt I will returm.

But I do want to find "sober" friends and I know it is a great place to make them.

      Anyways, welcome.

        Just arrived!

        Hello Trying,
Welcome to MWO. You will find lots of support here, from so many of us in various stages of recovery. Knowing and admitting you have a drinking problem is the all-important first step. Keep posting and reading - and with 5 weeks until your departure you have time to make changes if you are ready.
        Best to you.
        AF since May 6, 2010

Forget the past, plan for tomorrow, and live for today.

          Just arrived!

Stopped drinking 2 weeks ago today

          Hi
Unfortunately or fortunately-I hit my rock bottom 2 weeks ago.
My Husband threatened to leave me & I don't blame him,I was real real gone!
My drinking had escalated to almost a litre of vodka a day & sometimes a couple of glasses of wine on top of that.
As I'm currently taking a break from work (we intend to re-locate soon, back to where we come from originally)I was drinking during the day & got blotto regularly.
I was verbally abusive, threw things occassionally-basically a pain to live with.
So,having been sober in the past for seven years I do know what I 'should' be doing, using the support & contacts that are out there.
It took the threat from my Husband to leave & the stress I knew we had both experienced in moving away from friends & family & my support network etc. to bring me to my senses.
Already I'm feeling (& look) loads better, going to SMART recovery meetings & talking about my alcohol addiction with friends & AA contacts that I trust.
          It's a new start

Thank you so much all for all your support. Right now I am just doing lots and lots of reading. Knowing how other people cope is really helping.

A few of you have mentioned the toolbox. I'm not sure how to find this.
