:lRebirth, you actually have a very valid point. Cigarettes and smoking was widely advertised as being glamorous, and something was done about it. Alcohol does far more damage, but it is still widely glamorized. There are pressure groups against alcohol advertising - maybe we should join one of them.

Why is AL legal when other drugs are not??

          Hi Rebirth!
You can do this, it DOES get easier, I promise you. I was a daily binge drinker for lord knows how many years (I lost count). A 12 pack of beer per night, sometimes more...I mean come on, how do you justify drinking 12 beers, alone at home, on a Tuesday night? (or any other?) Well I sure found a reason to...happy, sad, lonely, sunny day, rainy day...you see what I mean! And I don't even want to think about the times I got in the car after 7-8 beers because I thought I was "running low"....leaving my 12 year old at home. So you see, no matter what you've done, most of us have done it too...and if we can help support you to get where we are now, then we're happy to do it!
Please take care. Hold on tight, the ride is worth it!
          xoxo

Wow K9. You don't know how much your words just struck me. Doing some rethinking now......

Very similar to my story. Except I would only drink 8 beers a night during work days (In my warped thinking I was being responsible by doing that...Jeez.) Weekend were much much worse. Friday would be about 10 to 12 beers before I would pass out. Then Saturday I would start drinking at about 10 or 11 in the morning and drink straight through until 11 or 1 at night. All this while I would be taking care of my 1 year old son. Sundays would be the same except I would stop at 6 or 7 at night (being responsible again:eeks. And I too would jump in the car as soon as my girlfriend got home if I was running low. Would make up some stupid excuse as to why I needed to go out.
So like K9 said no matter what you've done, most of us have too. I'm here to offer any help I can. It does get easier!

Why is AL legal when other drugs are not??

K9- your words made me shiver because it reminds me of the madness that alcohol brings. And yet when you drink you think its normal behaviour. Your signature always has an effect on me because I loved my alcohol more than my gorgeous little boy. I work full time and only have sundays off. Every week I use to say to myself" I will not drink on the weekend, I will not be hungover and waste my only day off with my son". And every weekend I was hungover and too tired to take my son to the park, too tired to do anything except to drink more. Thats all I cared about. Sometimes my son had to watch tv all day because his mum has fallen asleep on the sofa from being too hungover or drunk.
I am so embarassed at my behaviour and I thank this forum for helping me to stay sober.

jessie- I totally agree that drink should not be advertised so glamourously. If cigarettes are banned then so should AL?

DG- Thats a really good play on words. "decide" is much better than "try". I will use decide from now on. Has more strength to it.

Why is AL legal when other drugs are not??

                    Hi Rebirth,

Your words about being hungover on weekends struck close to home to me too...laying on the couch all day in the dark while my kid watched TV because "Mommy is sick"...oh those days are an embarrassment to me as well. I have a drawer full of "Get Well Cards" my daughter made for me...

I also remembered this one time that I took the dog for a walk (I took the dog on a lot of drunken walks...) and I stopped a few blocks down the street at a friends house. Well I had forgotten my cell phone (which would never have happened sober) and I was gone a long time. When I finally got home, my daughter was in tears because it was 9:30 at night, she had no idea where I was, and my cell phone was at home. She was putting her shoes on to go look for me. Imagine! My 11 year old (at the time) getting dressed at 9:30pm (her bedtime) to go look for her drunken mother that was wandering the neighborhood! Talk about shame and embarrassment. Not to mention the impression I left on my friends by barging in on them at 9pm drunk, with my dog. Jeesh, the "joys" of drinking huh? NOT.

Anyways, just remember you are NOT alone. Stick close to this site!! We're here for you!

He is a normal drinker so he does not understand how hard it is for me not to drink on a daily basis. He does not understand that being AF for 19 days feels like 19 years for me. I was just told that I should have drank sensibly from day one...

That remark upset me. So he didnt find alcolhol addictive but I did. But its not my fault! I didnt want to be an alcoholic. Who does! I wish there was some kind of law to prohibit excessive drinking promotions...something. not sure what. Other drugs are banned but AL isnt and its just as bad.If not worse then some of the banned ones.

Oh I will be quiet. I guess i am feeling sorry for myself. Just finding it difficult at the moment.
interestin thread rebirth, thot id out some lt on the moment, wether you drink like we did or just drink after youve been doin this as long as i have, and where ive been, drinking is accepted as a social event,it is not normal to drink,as far as your friend will never understand and for them to pass judgement ,thats sad there suppose to be normal, many doctors dont understand about the factts of aclchoholism,or any kinda of addiction.lets look at being to fat, skinny.cancer waht ever, people will feel sory for those poor folks, nananan not the drinker, thats pscotic at its formost,it also too many years to leglise drinking, and yes some medication should be legal, specially marijuanna, your doin great to me just relising you hav a problem with the drink, think of it like this,it will take you just as long to get to where you want to be,as you drank, take care and be easy on you gyco:thanks:t

hahaha. I still understood what you wrote Gyco. Just picking up on something you said...I dont smoke marijuana anymore (Use to about ten years ago) and I dont understand why alcohol is legal but weed isnt. Doesnt make sense to me. When I was high on weed ( from my personal experience), I chill out on the sofa, chat alot, get philosophical usually. At worse I got paranoid and go all quiet. But my senses were still there and I was aware of them. When I am high on alcohol I have not got a clue what I am doing! I cannot think and control my body anymore. I think its okay to drive a car, to be aggressive for no apparent reason, to walk in the middle of the road, to go home with a stranger, to leave my front door open, to break glasses, to burn my hands while cooking...the list goes on. Alcohol is dangerous stuff when addicted to it in comparison to weed in my opinion.
