I'm new without a clue
hello everyone. I've been here reading for a couple of weeks but i only decided to join today. The reason being is that of all the people i've went to for advice and all the web sites i've visited and a talk with a counsellor here, an AA meeting there, nothing ever gave me hope that someday, I would be AF until I found MWO. I guess what I have been looking for all along was what average people like myself go through from the time they take their last drink up until they can take it or leave it, and that is exactly what I have found with MWO. I would like start this story over but I am a terrible storyteller and typing class was a long time ago. I would like to say that I am happily married and the father of three wonderful children. I am 39 and I drink 10 to 20 beers a day. Up until about 3 weeks ago, I have had a successful surveying career. Thanks to my wife who works full time as a nurse, I have decided to take the summer off ( my first in 20 years) to be a stay at home dad and get my drinking problem under control. Just like my father, I only drink beer, and just like him, I am not a mean or loud person when I drink, but for the last couple of years, the drinking is starting earlier each day and sometimes its drinking instead of working. Like many before, I have tried numerous times to quit or just slow down without success. I drink so much beer some days that my wife said she would be happy if I only drank 8 or 10 a day. WOW!! Permission to drink 10 beers a day! That would be most beer drinkers dream. To be a stay at home dad with permission to drink. But there is only one problem with that. She had to put a limit on it. 8 or 10. That wont work. I cant have a limit put on it. I dont want to be told what I can or cant have. That is why I joined today. I have read countless stories here that I can relate to. Everyone opens up and tells the truth about what to expect when they quit drinking. Like I said, I am a terrible storyteller and I have a hard time keeping the timelines in order so I will stop for now. This is my second day AF but I dont know if i can make it three. I can only try. My biggest obstacle is boredom. I have poured myself into my work for so many years, I feel I have lost my imagination. I am looking foreward to any and all advice! Thanks for listening.Tags: None

Nobody,
I am sorry to say but as long as you are here, you are SOMEBODY! Welcome! Everyone here is very supportive, we dont judge, and yes we have all been there before and are all at various stages of our journey with one common goal; to be free! there are many supplements and meds out there to help with the struggle, as well as support from this site. I was one that could not control my drinking and I was drinking every night. I found my way out with meds and the help of people here. Keep posting, dont be afraid to ask questions, the chatroom is a good place to visit when you have urges to drink. There is always some one there to talk to about your challenges.
Anywho, my name is Road, and I am here if you have questions or need anything, again - Welcome!

thank you Road, I have a feeling that before the summer is over, I will have been here more than most! Just one quick note, "My Name Is Nobody" is the title of my favorite movie starring Henry Fonda and Terrance Hill. I just thought a little humor to get things going was a good way to start!

Hi Nobody!
Welcome to MWO, you've found a great place for encouragement and support. We all have the same problem here = alcohol. Whether we are trying to quit completely, or moderate, it is a challenge for each and every one of us. I too, only drank beer. I loved beer. And I could put away a 12 pack per night (every night of the week). My last beer was 85 days ago, and I owe much of my success to this wonderful community of people. We can all relate to anything you are going through, so please continue to share your story with us. I look forward to getting to know you throughout your journey!
K9:heart:I love my daughter more than alcohol:heart:
Believe in yourself. You are stronger than you think.

Hi Nobody and sunray. MYO is wonderful because there is a great mixture of people here. There are so many of us with the same drink problems, the same fears of stopping, the same frustration when slipping. And then there are people who have stopped drinking for years..their wisdom is immense. I love this place and its helping me to stay sober so stay here!!! xBe strong-

I'm new without a clue
Hi Nobody- :welcome:!!
I joined this community in March, the day I decided to try to live an AF life. I was drinking a large bottle of wine a nite and more if I was at a party and yes, I was driving as well. I hit bottom when I called in to work 2 days in a row because of hangovers. I used the book that I downloaded ($12), went out and bought the supplements that day and ordered the CD's. I threw myself headlong into this journey and except for 2 slips, I've been very successful. This community has been a lifesaver and I'm proud to say I now post on the Monthly Abstainers as much as I can.
I've recently had some bad health news that has reinforced my decision to be AF for the rest of my life. I thank god that I decided to quit when I did because I truly believe the news would have been 10 times worse. I now have the opportunity to turn things around.
Everyone here is more than eager and willing to help you attain whatever goal you would like to achieve, be it moderation or abstaining.
You say that boredom is your obstacle. Can you really be bored taking care of 3 kids everyday? What about planning day trips or letting them help with house/yard work and errand running? Your imagination has been buried under 20 beers a day-now let it free!!
One thing that will be crucial to your success is to know what your triggers are and to plan for them and to plan how to deal with them.
Use the Toolbox link given above for ideas on how to do that.
Stick around, read and post, read and post, visit the Newbies Nest and Chat. We'll be here for you. Good luck!!

I'm new without a clue
hello papamon3. Thanks for the welcome. I just want to say that the boredom comes from being an extremely high strung person. I guess that i am obsessive compulsive. even with the drinking, I manage to keep the house spotless, the dishes done, the laundry done, the lawn mowed, the garden weedless, and cook three meals a day for the family. I read books to my kids, play games and puzzles with them, I have taught them karate and we practice almost everyday. With all that, I still find that I have 4 or 5 hours to deal with everyday where I have nothing to do. That is why I am here. I need to learn how to be sober without going crazy.

Oh Man, Nobody!! Can I hire you?? I guarantee you'll have more than 4 or 5 hours of work to do at my place!! :H
You actually sound like the perfect candidate for the CDs. So many people on here swear by them-it helps relax them and remove the negative thinking. I have them but can't seem to squeeze in a half hour or so just to listen to them. Anyway, if you can afford it, I would definitely give it a go.
You can also always go into Chat if you are at wits end or even if you're not but want a little company. Someone is always there and ready to chat.New Birthday: May 8, 2010
