Do you get a cold when you stop drinking?

    Hello board,

I decided to stop drinking again. My avg drinking was 25 glasses of wine per week, about 5 bottles of wine. It was affecting my mood, my wallet, my weight and when I started to drink, I had to drink the next day. Anyway, this is my third try. First time, 12 days, second time 8 days, and I am on day 10 now and intend to carry on.

Now, I get a cold every single time I stop drinking. Does that happens to any of you? I know it is not a coincidence as it happens every single time, and when I drink I get a cold about once every two years or so, very very rarely.

    Any thought?

    Thank you, Patrick.

Patrick - Our bodies reacts to any change we make even if its "good changes", its a real possibility there is a connection, its just your system getting used to not being fed alcohol.

Congrats on day 10! Wishing you much strength.

I get a runny nose when I do a detox diet - it might be the same thing?

I wonder if you've "told yourself" that you're going to catch a cold when you quit drinking... The mind is a powerful thing!!

        Great going on 10 days.

When I was drinking I didn't really notice normal things like colds, aches and pains and a whole host of other things. You see when you stop all sorts of normal things happen, and colds can be one of them.

Actually, Keyners, I also get a runny nose and a "cold" when I quit drinking.

I think it is a physical reaction. We suddenly have actually got liquid (H2O) in our bodies instead of being so dehydrated by alcohol. Our bodies no longer have to over compensate for the lack of hydration.

I doubt this happens to everyone, we are all different.

But, this is my take and not worth much in the end. Because I have no idea why. Just a stake in the sand, as it were.

Thank you guys for your words. The way I see it now is that I will be better off in a few weeks than I was a few weeks ago. Take care of yourselves, Patrick.
