I'd love to be on Antabuse - takes all the choice out of the matter, albeit not the cravings. However, I'm afraid of ingesting something unawares - something that contains even a trace amount of AL that could cause an unpleasant reaction. Did you ever have any problems with that?

Well done Overit! My Doc wouldn't prescribe Antabuse yesterday as he said he felt he didn't have a strong enough knowledge of the drug to do that but he's referred me to a specialist unit called LifeLine who can assess me and hopefully give the go ahead, Grrrr nothing is ever simple like you think! I'm going to have to make sure I keep strong until then which right now seems fine but I know from past experience that my mind can switch in a second. xx

Oh Hi, we are cross posting (and I am running late for work grrrr!)

Im sorry the doctor would not prescribe it! Grrrr Jackass. Dont give up, and remember Antabuse is a tool but not a cure all. You can be successful with or without it!! Keep trying to get it if thats what you want to do.

Coco, I never had an issues with interactions, and my sick mind liked to push the limit. I gargled with full strength alcohol mouthwash and nothing. I am pretty sure in order to get sick you have to have a full drink of alcohol, so just a tiny trace should not do anything. Of course, I could be wrong, but I never had any problems and K-9 has said she did not either.

Happy September 1st everyone!!! Be strong!!!!

          P.S. Time.

I had a lovely nurse and a great doctor recommend Antabuse to me. Then when they both left the practice, they were replaced with a different Doctor. Now this Doctor did NOT want to prescribe me Antabuse and even said he has NO patients who take it. Its strange how doctors have such different opinions on things. Two said it was a great thing and one said its not!

                    Sober (AF) September Challenge

Evening everyone from sunny Scotland - yes we do get some sun here! I'm 8 days AF and so happy to join you all as remaining sober is my No 1 priority for September. I'm off out for a long walk while the weather is good but will check back in later.

                    September
Autumn........asks that we prepare for the future -
that we be wise in the ways of garnering and keeping.
But it also asks that we learn to let go - to acknowledge
                    the beauty of sparseness.

                    Dewdrop :h
Enjoy today - there will be no other one quite like it....

Over it, yeah its so strange how opinions can differ so much, at the end of the day I know its the best option for for me a someone who can abstain for short periods of time before slipping and then getting straight back on the wagon again, I suppose it would be different if I slipped and then binged for a week afterwards so they've got to be careful who they give it to. Also I am the kind of person who WOULD take it every morning without fail as I've never been a morning drinker, I don't give drink a second thought in the mornings unless I'm hungover and feeling sorry for myself of course! To be fair to the Doc, I think he was genuine when he said he didn't feel he had enough knowledge of the drug, he was genuinely concerned for me and could see I had done my research and he apologised for having to refer me somewhere else. He said he would have no problem filling out repeat prescriptions for me after I have an initial one, its quite scary that a Doc can be so unsure of prescribing something though!! oh well, sorry this is the SOBER SEPT thread, not the whinge about my Doctor thread. Appolgies!!!! xx

                          Time,
Sounds like you have a very wise GP there. I was talking to my old key worker/nurse ( he's not old just that I haven't seen him for a while). He was saying that antabuse isn't routinely prescribed in the UK any more as so many people were trying to drink through it. The specialist will know an awful lot more.
And I'd love to hear more about the Lifeline unit.
