I would agree with that, but you can try to get a few supplements that help you ride it out. I think Gamma helps the shakiness and L Glut the cravings, many like Kudzo, plus A1 just makes me feel better - a great vitamin etc. filler. And keep busy doing other things when the bad times come. Move your mind to something else. And yes, just 'sit through it'. Good luck!From the Sanskrit prayer;

But today well lived makes every yesterday a dream of happiness and every tomorrow a dream of hope."

Hi Tired,
I think many of us here know what you are going through. A big welcome to you - I hope you can use this place to help support you on the road to recovery.
If you were shaking so badly that only drinking cured it, you may need to seek medical help to detox. It can be dangerous to go through withdrawal without Librium or something similar.
How much have you been drinking, for how long and what is your poison? If you don't mind sharing, it's just it would be easier to advise you. And also where are you based - US, UK?
Everyone here will want to help you - it's a great forum.

thanks for responding! I definately need help from people that understand this crazy lifestyle. Kim, I have been drinking a large bottle of wine per night but the last 5 days I have gone through 2 bottles of vodka and 5 bottles of wine. I am in the US. The last time I went to the hospital for help, they told me I could do it on my own. lol guess they have never lived in this place before! I know that feeling like crap is expected but how can anyone function when shaking uncontrollably?

Ah Casualty can be sooo rubbish sometimes- I went there after having had a seizure once and my friend had to practiaclly twist the so-called doctor's arm to get me anything (this was in the UK). The doc just thought I was drunk or something - he didn't even speak enough English to understand what 'teetotal' meant - really. It really is too bad that in this day and age there is still so much stigma and ignorance surrounding alcoholism and treatments.
Hmm, I don't know if you are likely to get into hot water with withdrawl or whether it will just be very unpleasant. It will be unpleasant either way and if you haven't had a seizure or hallucinations or anything when stopping before I would imagine you'd be alright, but couldn't guarantee it. Any chance you could taper down the amount you have been drinking over the next few days? I could never taper, as I'd end up drinkng all I had, but others have managed it.
When I do withdrawl, it usually means 3 days in bed, yes TOTALLY unable to function, sweating, shaking, projectile vomiting, hallucinating - the lot, not even able to walk mostly due to dizziness. Not nice but necessary.
Have you ever tried coming off it before? How long have you been drinking daily?Recovery Coaching website

Hi Tired, I'm sorry to hear about your discomfort, I know it's awful. As Kim said detoxing can be dangerous. Are you able to go to a detox center in your area. Many take med insurance. Is that doable? If so, I recommend it. I went to detox and it was a positive experience. I hope this helps.Outside of a dog a book is mans best friend. Inside of a dog its too dark to read

Ignorance surround alcholism is the perfect way of putting it!! It seems that drugs and eating disorders have taken the lead. As far as the withdrawl, I think I will be ok as I have done it before. This will by my 5th time trying to quit. I did do it for over 30 days before. How messed up is an addiction that controls your whole being? I quit before, was HAPPY but I'm back to this. There must just be something wrong with me. Ive been drinking daily for 8 years, my son was dignoised as a diabetic and that sent me over the edge. But looking back, I guess that is just an excuse for my own behavior!

Ah ok well you know your body best I think so as regards withdrawl, I would recommend for Day 1: an empty bucket (you know what for), a big jug of water and some fruit to snack on if you can manage it. Bananas are particularly good as they have loads of potassium - you need to stock back up on this. B-vitamins, especially thiamine. Magnesium can help a little with the shakes and can help with sleep - although I know sleep often goes out of the window when withdrawing.
Well done on the 30+ days - it just shows you CAN do it, but maybe need a bit more help to maintain it. Story of my life too. There is something wrong with you - it's the same as is wrong with all of us on here - we're addicted. Sorry to hear about your troubles. What support have you had, if any, in the past? How did you manage 30 days? You need to figure out what worked last time, what caused you to give in - and ask for the right help. I do hope you can find it - this site is a VERY good place to start. Take a look at the 'Toolbox' thread and when you feel up to it, read the posts on here.
Good luck - let me know if I can help any more.Recovery Coaching website

Hi tired,
Welcome to MWO, glad you found us & this good place!
I remember being told to take care of myself for the first 4 days or so as if I had the flu or something. Lots of water, rest, a little fresh air now & then, etc. Just accept that you will feel crappy for a few days but then you will get much, much better.
I suppose the best thing for me was the Hypnotherapy CDs. They really helped me to relax & change my thinking about AL. Drinking is no longer an option for me - no matter what!!
I made that firm commitment & I'm sticking with it - you can too!
Wishing you the best on your journey!

Well I'm signing off to go to beddy-byes. Let us know how you're getting on Time. We've all been in the same boat, although we are at different points on the river if you know what I mean, so you'll find a lot of people that care on here and want to help. Rest up,
