    LFT HIGH

Hi all great forum for advice and support. i recently had LFT and GGt test and my ALT was 150!!!, and GGt was 221, my doctor phoned and told me the results, i was nearly in tears :upset: she said that they were very high liver enzymes. But on the day i did not fast(food), but had been drinking alot of alcohol the night before and the day that i had the blood test, does anybody think that the ALT and GGT was very high because of the AL in my system.? I have been drinking alot of alchol over the last 10 years but recently doing it in the morning and night time, i'm really sick of myself, i am ashamed of myself, my doctor said i did not need to fast for LFT but i think that my results were high because of the excessive booze in my system the night before and the day of the test.. Any advice!!

The GGT is definitely high. I'm having blood taken for a liver test tomorrow and I've been told I don't need to fast. I'm over 5 months AF and so my results should be pretty low, I hope!!!!Normal reading for women is something like around 30-60, not sure what is should be for men but 225 is definitely something to be concerned about. Seem to remember George Best was supposed to have a reading of around 1000.

I've been told in the past that GGT is high immediately after drinking, but that drops off over weeks and months back to normality. Or should do. The high reading is a sign your liver is working VERY hard at the moment.

It took 3 months for my Ggt levels to go back to normal. My doc asked me to fast but that could have been cos he was checking cholesterol as well? Not sure.
Funny UK, when my doc was talking about where my levels were last Christmas he said I wasn't QUITE at George Bests levels but getting there - yuch!
Anyway Jake, regardless of whether the booze the night before elevated your levels to me they sound pretty high - I reckon you need to stop drinking for a while anyway and see what they are in a month say? My doc reckons I wouldn't have lived more than a few years if I'd kept going and back then - I didn't care. I do now

DON'T drink the night before a blood test! I'm sure you knew this. Ask to have another test done, and drink only water from 7pm until the test in the morning. It's doesn't sound like u followed drs rules. Clear liquid does not include vodka. It's called water.

            Jewel that was funny.

Yup the numbers are high because of your drinking. It takes real time, days, weeks, to significantly lower the numbers. Google it - you can read lots about it.

Check out your nails too. If they are whitish it suggests liver problems. If you have half nails, it suggests kidney problems. If you have no moons, your organs are having problems dealing with the alcohol.

If you want to you can use this scare to think about what you really what for yourself and your future. I wish you the best.

Sheri is right, the idea is to get your liver in order ...by not drinking...not by finding some way to mask the results. I'm back on the wagon (again!!) & hope to god that I can finally do it this time

Try Milk Thistle, the combination iof MT & not drinking will bring down your reading & help your liver...I got mine done last week & after 2 weeks of not drinking plus the Milk Thistle I got it down to 82...not great but getting there.....maybe this time...

                Good luck & god speed

Jake, the test was correct - in that it was telling you how hard your liver was working that day. Yes you can abstain for a day or two and it will probably drop a little, however it'll go right back to where it was as soon as you go back to drinking.

My blood has been taken for the test today and I should know in about 5 days time.

                    Just to add;

My last LFT was taken when I checked into a treatment centre almost 2 years ago, hungover after drinking the day/night before and for most of the previous 3 weeks. My reading was still under 60 even though I still had some AL in my system.

Hi guys thanks for all the support and encouragement. I know that i am a heavy drinker and its hard liquor as well. I feel really crappy in the morning and have slight shakes from drinking nite B4, so i result to drinking b4 i go to work, just to ease the nerves. I am disgusted with myself when i have to result to drinking to get by on a normal day, and my work involves dealing with the public on a daily basis the AL gived that little encouragement. Drinking has been getting worse year by year to be honest i have been having LFTs every year since 2007 which at the beginning they results were fine but this year they seem to have gone really abnormal. I really need help i asked doc to get scan not a CT scan but a ultrasound scan like pregnant women have, i dont know accurate they are (Nxt week Thursday). The scan i know will show some liver damage, but i need to quit BIG TIME, ortherwise i'll be in corpse soon, i dont have the will power to do it, its like the AL is my salvation. Guys how about Baclofen??

Sheri and all members you have been so supportive and encouraging, and i know i need to stop AL otherwise i will put myself in a early grave. But my Doc said try counselling and group meetings, but that is not suitable to me because i live in small community, and operate a business and deal with public everyday, how could i do that without local people knowing that i have a drink problem.

I have read up on Baclofen briefly on the forum, and am thinking of giving that a try. Any members know how much Bac you would need say for 3months supply??

Find a meeting in a neighboring community if you're uncomfortable going to one locally, Jake.
