Paula2010;955774 wrote: Hi everyone - its amazing to see so many of you here with me feeling the same way - its awesome actually - not because we all have a problem but because of the support. I feel stronger already. I too am going AF for the weekend and up until 25th Sept when I visit friends - this will test the moderation out!

Last night I went AF and loved it! Not that I achieved much at home but just going to bed and feeling the warm comfort of it compared to falling into bed and passing out. I think I went to sleep with a smile on my face! I woke at 5am compared to my usual 2am - and felt great! Got up before 6am and did some washing and ironing before work! Usually it takes all my energy just to get breakfast and organise the kids.

It is great to go to bed and know that I haven't said anything I won't remember to the kids and that I haven't emailed anyone, spoken to anyone on the phone or posted anything on my FB page that I will be embarrased about. Control is a wonderful thing!!

We can all support each other through these early days - thank you everyone...:thanks:
hi paula ,:goodjob:youve like many have found a great site, good people, where theres a will theres a way, most addicted minded people have an option, one is to keep drinking the way they do,and inevitalbly die, total abstinance, which for many is there onlyy choice, then you have to find new ways to deal with society, whats going on in society will never change for us,conflick anyway you choose, many people cant moderate there alchohol consumption, somewhere in time.they sellf detanate themselves, learning how to moderate, takes practice, teaching ones self to enjoy being medicated,if that makes sense, ive done both, moderation like not drinking has its challenges each day,we have an addictioon sober or drinking, never forget were unique in so many different ways,:thanks:i wish you well gyco

Way to go Paula! Dorsetdude just jump back on with us - our weekend is starting! AS for sleeping - try Melatonin. It works well instead of many things that make us hungover (even without our pal Al).
Love to keep reading and posting but off to work and NOT HUNGOVER!

Hey all! I have a similar story as well! It is nice to know we are not alone! I have been trying to be AF but keep slipping! Wine is the culprit! If I didn't drink wine, I wouldn't drink! I would like to join all of you in our journey to being healthy! This weekend will be tough, with one and 1/2 bottles of white in the fridge left over from a party. We can do this! Keep me updated and I'll do the same! Good luck :-)

            Morning everyone

Saturday morning and no hangover - that only happens if I have to drive somewhere!!! Was so good to be doing stuff last night instead of moving around like a slug unable to concentrate on anything. I went to the supermarket yesterday and DIDN"T EVEN LOOK IN THE DIRECTION OF THE BOTTLE SHOP!! I find this amazing - because it didn't even cross my mind. I went there determined to buy healthy food and snacks and that was it.

Dorsetdude - I am sure most/all of us slip up - but the thing is that each new day presents a new opportunity to do better. I can relate to the holidays drinking issue. When planning for a holiday it is all I think about - when and where I will sit and relax with some wine. I guess we have to change our way of thinking about this and depends on whether moderation or AF is your goal. Only you can decide what you will do and what you can handle, you will enjoy your holiday more without alcohol - it will be a unique experience in itself - but whatever happens make sure you come back here and check in on your return.

Sapphire1 - thank you so much for your encouragement - the support here is amazing and I am sure the only reason I am doing so well - well I am only onto day 3 but got one Friday night down!!

Mumtotwo - do you exercise much? Personally if I get exercise I sleep so much better - even 30 mins a day may make a difference. Is it possible to take the kids for a walk - or even 1 or 2 of them. No wonder you are having trouble sleeping - 5 under 5 is a lot! Not sleeping is the pits - but hopefully you can find other ways than alcohol to fall asleep. I don't think that alcohol induced sleep did me any favours over the years. What about meditation? That always puts me to sleep.

Mere - well done on day 6! Almost a week and we are making it through a weekend! I was talking to a friend who rang last night - she had been drinking I could tell - it felt so good not to be.

Gyco - thanks for your support and encouragement too.

Stressd - the bottles of wine in the fridge are like a beacon "drink me, drink me". Maybe pour them down the sink - kinda symbolic! I have done this before and even though it feels like a waste of wine and money i figure better down the sink than down my mouth and then wake up with a hangover - I was still wasting the wine because I was drinking it to get drunk not enjoy it.

Have a great day everyone - stay strong - no hangover Sunday coming up!!!

                Hi Paula,

Just reading back over the thread and you asked about buying some vitamins and because you are in Oz they will take some time to get to you. If you want to get some now from the health food store these are what I would recommend: Dr. Sandra Cabots Liver Tone Plus Powder (Brilliant); Magnesium; Blackmores Executive Stress Mega B:; Vitamin C; Vitamin B3; L-Glutamine (for cravings); Zinc; VItamin B12; GABA; Evening OIl of Primrose. It seems like quite a lot of to stock up on, but you can get all of them locally and you wont have to pay for international shipping which can by quite expensive. If the dollars are a bit tight cut it down to the Liver Tone Plus Powder; The Executive Stress Mega B; VItamin C; and L-Glutamine. At home you can help your detox along by drinking a lot of water with lemon juice; go easy on caffeine though it with dehydrate you. The magnesium will help you relax and sleep as well. Keep up the good work:goodjob:

Sapphire1 - thanks just had a coffee!!! whoops.

Thanks for the info on the vitamins - I already take Inner Health Plus, Digestive Enzymes (Cabots), multi-vitamin, fish oil and Evening Primrose. I would like to get the L-Glutamine - cravings are ok at the moment but I am no fool as to think this is it. Is the Kudzu any good? I read at the bottom of the info about weight gain and that put me off - I have lost 25kgs but still need to lose another 20 so gaining weight is the last thing I want to happen at this stage. Thanks again for your input.

Hi Paula, I have never taken kudzu, and not sure how easy it is to get it in oz so cant help you there. I take Topamax and it is amazing. L-Glutamine is also great for sugar and carbohydrate cravings so it is a great amino for people struggling with alcohol addiction. I think there is a critical relationship between the stimulating effects of caffeine and sugar and the desire for alcohol, so it might be worth a closer look at some info about that. Inner health plus and the other things that you are on are great...you are on the right track. I still have one coffee per day...first thing in the morning but thats it, any more and it tends to set up my craving cycle again, so I cant risk it, but it is a personal thing, and it might not worry you so much.

OH my gawd you guys I drank too much caffeine (didn't realize it) and ended up drinking some wine to calm myself down. S**T didn't realize the caffeine was making me so jittery. Okay back in the saddle. Sapphire1 did you buy topomax from the River pharmacy?
Oh tired, but it feels good not to be blasted just a bit of wine and no more caffeine shakes. We have a hypnotherapist in town here who I'm going to call on Monday - apparently she has an incedible track record with gastric lap band tx (can you believe that) and smoking/addictions. I'll keep you posted. Hopefully someone will notice my post

                        Gday Mere,
NO I got my Topamax from my doctor, but others on here get it from River pharmacy. I do pay a bit for it because it is not covered by the NHS for treating alcohol addiction ($77.00) for a months supply, but when I am drinking I pay a heck of a lot more a month than that!!!! Its interesting about the caffeine and how it makes us jittery and nervous isnt it? I have cut down to one a day now and it is a lot better for my nervous system, although I do have a cup of tea in the afternoons. Whats this with the hypnotherapist and the lap-band? I Understand about what it can do to help with addictions, as I use hypno tapes to help myself..can you explain a bit more about the lap-band bit?

Lap band - no AL here

Yeah it's pretty interesting. She is a certified Hypnotherapist in lap band "hypnotherapy." Our clincial supervisor did it today. She treats it just like the surgery but with better results!
The surgery apparently is pretty hit and miss but her hypnosis therapy apparently does the trick. We even sent the supervisor a good well card because she had to go through the whole treatment like a real surgery!

That lapband hypnotherapy does sound interesting Mere - much less invasive than the actual surgery - would be interested to hear how she goes.

A weird thing happened to me last night - I woke up (this is gross) with my whole body sweating - all over! I have NEVER had this experience before. I did drink 3 litres of water with lemon yesterday - perhaps it was my body detoxing? I am on Day 4 AF so wondering how this could happen now. Has anyone else experienced this?

I must say with each passing day I am feeling better in the mornings - the first day I felt good compared to a hangover but moody. Today I feel much better. I have to go to town today as I am going to the gym and I thought I had better hop on here and promise myself that I WILL NOT BE GOING TO THE GROG SHOP!!! No way am I undoing 4 days of hard work. I know the first day is the hardest and I don't want to go back there!! Please let me remember this later!!!

I hope everyone else has managed to stay AF over the weekend too. Have a great Sunday!

                                Paula
