What are the right reasons for quitting

    Hi All,

I am ready to quit (again) but I feel there is something missing in my reasoning.

I am not yet 40 but I suffer from depression, high blood pressure and sleep apnea - all of these are being treated sucessfully. Also I am about 15 kgs overweight. I am convinced that if I quit AL and lost weight, then the other issues would also be easier to manage.

I think these are GOOD reasons to stop drinking but they don't seem good enough.

    Does that make sense?

What are the right reasons for quitting

    Hi again.

Well, you're asking if those reasons are good enough? Heck yea they are, because you are good enough to be without the health problems. I know you'll lose weight, lol. I was putting away about 2.5 cases of beer a week. Im 200 lbs and a size 35 in the waist, and even when I would stop for 4 days, I would drop about 5 lbs. so Im planning on dropping at least 10-15 lbs.

What are the right reasons for quitting

      Hi Charlotte

Of course these are excellent reasons for quitting. I have suffered from depression in the past myself and as you will know already alcohol makes it a lot worse. We all have reasons for wanting to stop even without medical issues that we are aware of because mentally we know it is doing us no good. But what you are saying does make sense. Despite knowing that our lives will improve without alcohol the fear of losing something that has become a major part of our lives can be very strong. Because of that irrational fear we can convince ourselves that those very valid reasons for stopping are not good enough. That is only my experience of it but it isn't a loss to be without alcohol and you say you are ready to quit again, so I wonder what is holding you back.

Charlotte - ANY reason is a good reason to quit!! You don't need to try and weigh the reasons....if you have a reason at all then it is perfect! Your body deserves to be happy and healthy.....dont' doubt yourself....just go for it. I have faith in you!

          Charlotte:

The blessing is that you are not yet 40 years old and you understand eliminating alcohol will improve your health. Losing pounds, reducing my blood pressure, lowering my cholesterol and sugar levels are all benefits that I have recognized in the 70+ days I've been AF. I waited until I was 56 to address the problem and believe me, I wish I had the foresight and determination to tackle it when I was 40 or younger.

Keep up the good work and best of luck to you!

Those are fantastic reasons and similar to why I've ditched the booze as well.
