Limers, I just wanted to say that my brother was a druggie, stealing, awful son to my mother. I'm so sorry to hear that you are having to deal with this - I've seen what it can do. Hope you can figure something out so you can save yourself from him! If I can ever be of help please PM me. I don't profess to have any answers but could tell you more about what my mom went through.:l

Limers, I'm so sorry you are having a rough time with your son. I have 3 sons and between them they have put me through the wringer more than once. It's easy for me to say, but if he is 18 there probably isn't an awful lot you can do. The main thing is protect yourself and your sanity!!- don't let it lead to drinking - that's no. 1. After that I s'pose its a matter of not leaving money and stuff around, I've no reason to think mine have taken money but I never leave it round - learnt that from my Mum, she even brought her handbag to the loo and she had 3 girls!!
My thoughts are with you and please come and vent as much as you feel you want to/need to - so much better than brooding

Limers, your plan sounds like an EXCELLENT idea!
I want to tell you a story that I think of all the time in situations like this. When my husband and I first married, we went on a wonderful white water rafting trip down the Snake River in Idaho - absolutely fantastic. We were with a group and had very experienced guides with us the whole time. This was a 10-day trip, and we docked each evening and camped out. One day we docked, and the guides explained clearly the emergency protocol. We could swim out to a certain point away from the dock, but it was very dangerous and prohibited to swim out beyond that point. Then, they gave us instructions on what to do should someone happen to inadvertently swim past the safe spot and get caught up in the eddy. They said UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES should any of us EVER swim out to try to help the person being swept along because then not just is one person's life in jeopardy (hypothermia), two lives would be in jeopardy. Well, one person (there's always one, right?) did just that and got swept down the river and almost died. He had to be airlifted to the hospital but ended up being ok. I'll never forget this story, and think of it being analgous to your situation and the situation of my mother. If you jump in and try to save someone who is drowning (your son in the case of drugs, stealing), you will take the chance of symbolically dying yourself (he can ruin your life). I don't pretend to have answers but this story about your son hits so close to home -- I hope you can keep him from ruining your life. I think the uncle plan sounds great - wish my mom had thought of something like that!!
